Coconut Bar for the Birds (Melanerpes chrysogenys)

This is something I've never seen before. This opened coconut was up very high in a palm taller than the light posts. As a San Blas Jay was drinking and eating, the Golden-cheeked Woodpecker drove him off and had a drink himself. I'm not sure who opened the coconut, but it was a popular stopping place. After the Woody finished, five San Blas Jays flew in.

Dry Tropical Forest

Jalisco, Mexico

Melanerpes chrysogenys

Since it sounds like you found it this way, do you think the Jays and Woodies worked to get it open like that? I have to use my machete just to get even close the that! Thanks for sharing these great shots!

I don't know if it was a joint effort or not. The closest thing I've seen to this was in Australia. I saw a group of Sulfur-crested Cockatoos work together to get a coconut to drop and after it dropped (and presumably cracked) they worked together to get it torn up.
