Gull melange .... and a quiz

Photo of the feeding frenzy at the tip where I join a group who catch and colour-ring gulls. Lots in the photo but it is noticeable how numbers at the tip have declined over recent years as there is less food in our rubbish bins.

How many species can you see .... and specifically how many Great Black-backed gulls?

Bumper prize is the same I got from IDing the woodpecker in Scridifer's quiz!
Habitat
Landfill

Not good on young Gulls, so a guess at 5 species, G.BB, HG, BHG, RBG, CG and 6 GBB. :eek!:

The cheque is in the post Mick honest!

Gulls aren't my forte but I'm going to take a stab at four species! A great group capture, whereabouts in Essex was it taken?

Nope!! LOL!! I can hardly work out which bit of bird belongs to which bird and which is black bin bag!!!!

However, I'll make a guess at 4 GBBG's;)

Sooooo it seems a lot of people are re-cycling their kitchen waste in your area too. Can only be a good thing, even if it does mean you don't get to ring so many gulls now.

A great picture this Mick - very well done.

I can't even make how how many birds are in the picture. Thats my excuse anyway (lol). Brilliant picture Mick!!!

Ok so not THAT much interest in the bumper prize, and no winner. (there are 3 GBBG - 2 adults and a 3cy) and only 3 species (a gazillion Herring of all ages showing just how different they can be, the 3 GBBG's and the lone BHG front right)
So I get to keep the cheque, Chris! Taken at Pitsea landfill.
The cannon net was triggered just after this catching 418 birds - so these lot all have colour rings now. Watch out for them please!

Too late to guess (and I wouldn't have got it right anyway!). Brilliant group capture, Mick!

Hi Mick,

Thanks for that! I'm back in Essex next week and plan to visit Rainham Marshes so you never know!

Chris

My goodness, what a mob! I'm not even gonna try counting these, let alone separating out the species :eek!:

As for my mystery bird yesterday - you were right: not a martin, but still a lifer. Pepe came up with the solution at last, I think: juvenile Pin-tailed Whydah. Will post a shot or two of an adult male in my SF set later tonight. And we did see banded martins too, also lifers, though I didn't get a picture of them.
