Shoebill in flight (Balaeniceps rex)

We watched a shoebill at Mabamba Wetlands in Uganda for some considerable time. While first being very much inactive, it then began to preen itself and to walk around. Finally it took off, with this (cropped) photo being the only flight picture I managed to get.

What a great time you had with this Shoebill Robert - a species I'd really love to see!!

It's a shame we don't see more pictures of this one coming in.

We don't currently have a flight image for him in the Opus, so I'll upload this one to the article shortly - many thanks for sharing it with us.
