These can be found in most fresh water streams even drainage ditches on farms. We had a real problem with these when I was growing up on the farm.

I saw one the other day swimming with a kid on its back ;)

A superbly-detailed shot of this muskrat, Donny. It looks very much like one we've got over here. I think it was introduced from the States and it is considered a pest and is culled on a regular basis.
 
Beautifully captured Donny! I've never heard of one on our lake but we do have the larger otters.
