South American Painted Lady (closed wing)
South American Painted Lady (Vanessa carye) Wingspan 3.8-5.7 cm (1.5-2.2 in). It looks almost identical to the West Coast Lady. I guess that is the reason many taxonomist treat the West Coast Lady as a subspecies of the South American Painted Lady. Leeward side of Reserva Nacional Lomas de Lachay, Lima, Per. Xeric hills with scattered shrubs and stands of columnar cactus (Haagecereus lachayensis) at ca. 355 m (1,165 ft) elevation.

I do believe I really like the underwing pattern more so than the top wing on this Butterfly. Nicely illustrated Stanley.

What incredible detailed patterns on this lovely butterfly, Stanley.

A lovely creature, and an excellent shot. I especially like the orange and brown tones of the lichens, which reflect the colours of the insect's wings, and the contrasting textures.

I think you've just provided my brother with the ID of a butterfly he photographed in Buenos Aires in March, and posted on Flickr. He just gave it the title "sp?" It looks a lot like this, so thank you very much Stanley!

Very good photo showing so well the capacity of the butterflyu to blend into the surroundings.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
