Common Heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescence: Boraginaceae) with a Syrphid Fly. This Peruvian native shrub has showy inflorescences and is very aromatic with a vanilla smell. It has been cultivated in many parts of the world, especially in subtropical and tropical zones. Santa Eulalia Canyon, Lima, Perú below San Pedro de Casta. Dry mountain side scrub at ca. 3,000 m (9,842 ft) elevation.

Oh how pretty it is Stanley. We have some form or other of helotrope in gardens here, but I never grew any when I had a garden.

You've a super double here with the fly too - very well done lad.

Wow! That's one big syrphid I met a biologist gathering syrphids at the botanical gardens here last weekend. Amazing they were still about so late in the year. We've had a mild Fall, but now snow is forecast Sunday night.
