but definitely not a mamba. I think maybe it's a Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta). Could also be a Black Racer, but it wasn't very fast. So I'll leave it as rat snake unless and until somebody corrects me.

Nice picture, but from that angle and resolution it is almost impossible to tell whether it is a Black Rat Snake or a Northern Black Racer. However, the smooth and shiny scales lead me to believe that it is a racer...and I'm a snake guy, but one of my friends who is from the East Coast says it looks like a Rat Snake to him...LOL So...Black Rat Snake it is...
