Juvenile Ruddy-breasted Seedeater (probable) (Sporophila minuta)

 • rka
The juvenile seedeaters can be a bit difficult to distinguish. The white spots on the outside of the beak and the beak colour make this a likely Ruddy-breasted.

What a lovely picture you've taken of this young sweetie RKA.

Are you happy enough with your ID for me to add this picture to The Opus, or do you think we should go to the ID forum for confirmation? Could you let me know please lad.

Our Opus Editor, Niels, seems to be happy enough with your identification RKA, so I'll upload this to The Opus now.

Nice one lad, thanks.

Ooops .... LOL Looking at that thread again, I think Niels was saying it's a female. So that's how I've labelled it. However, it's easy enough to change if necessary!

Females and juveniles are quite similar. I looked at several female pics on the Internet and the white spots on either side of the beak shown in my pictures are not obvious. We know for sure the males have them. Thats the main reasoning for picking a juvenile male over female. Also, I could be imagining a bit but there could be ruddyness just beginning to show in the middle of the chest/belly area.

Uploaded in the Bird Id forum a composite showing this bird (highlighting the possibly different coloured area), an adult female from the web, and a juvenile from the web for comparison. Lets see what the feedback is.
