This is a female. Males are reddish on their crown and chest. This species is endemic to Chile and adjacent Western Argentina. They use their serrated bill to strip plants of buds and leaves. Laboratory studies found they may consume more than 5 times their body weight each day apparently because their preferred diet has relatively low nutritional content,(López-Calleja and Bozinovic 1999. The three South American plantcutters were formerly placed in their own family, Phytotomidae. They have since been moved into the Cotingas (Cotingidae).
