Red Crossbill

Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)

Adult female. My son and I were returning from exploring a section of Sweeney Ridge in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area when we were stopped in our tracks by several Red Crossbills feeding nearby. I managed several photos of these fascinating birds before my camera batteries died. The crossed bill tip is an adaptation for extracting pine nuts. These birds appear to be the large-billed "type 2" birds. The call-notes were fairly clipped.
