Australian White Ibis, Threskiornis molucca (Threskiornis molucca)

Australian White Ibis, Threskiornis molucca, feeding juvenile. Oakden Native Fish Sanctuary, South Australia. This colony of Ibis is in the heart of the Adelaide suburbs. The colony has grown to over 400 in a very short time and many of the local residents are fed up with the noise and stench as their houses are so close to the small park where the colony resides. The birds are protected. At the end of the breeding season it is anticipated that the vegetation where they are nesting will be cut down to encourage them to move on. For those of us who dont live right next door to them it seems a real shame, as the birds feed on many of the parks and school ovals in the vicinity and are delighted in by the wider community. It points out the difficulties that urban wildlife can cause when fauna is in such close proximity to people.
