Still digging through the archives, thought I'd post this from 1992, as a change from the usual garden birds. The quality doesn't compare with what's possible today (with superior yet reasonably affordable lenses) but it's my only sighting of the species. It's from a transparency scanned by my brother, and was taken with a cheap and cheerful 600mm mirror lens.

Oldie Goldie shot , very beautiful little bird , in 1992 you were using a 600 mm mirror lens ! That is wonderful John . You can not believe that more than ten years ago I bought a second hand of your Sigma 600 F8 mirror type for about 65$ ! That time, its mirrors were dirty due to air pollution during years , I carefully opened its front lens and cleaned lenses and its two mirrors. It is a lovely lens , I have taken many interesting shots with it. Few years ago I bought a brand new Samyang 500 F6.3 mirror type with its adapter ring /with no lens inside ring/ for about 500$ , this lens is much sharper and clearer than that Sigma. Just to let you know !
This is a very nice shot of a lovely little bird , images of mirror lenses are different and very interesting , many tfs MF

Excellent work then and now (kudos to your brother as well). They still hold wonderful memories. TFS John!

Lovely birds, I'm fortunate to see them quite often here! Belated congratulations on the Lifer John and a cracking capture!
