shag, I think from comparing recent cormorant pic, see second drying wings. surprised it allowed me to get so close with only 300mm lens

yes, this is just what this bird did. It used a rock on one side, then decided there were too many people nearby, so flew across the stream to finish wing drying on the post, and stayed there until the dog got too close
