Don't know how many of you have noticed THIS thread... petition to get protection for swifts and bats. Worth signing I reckon.
Black Throated Thrush showing well in garden in Newholm this morning. All roads from Cleveland to Whitby were no problem and even the road into the village was cleared. Residents of the village seemed fine with our presence and very sociable. I understand that since we left there has been a collection pot for the RNLI been put out so dig deep if you visit.

The thaw should see remaing snow all melted over this weekend and, hopefully, more open water around the Reserve. A Tawny Owl was calling this morning in Childers/Corbett Wood. A BITTERN flew from Old Eaa Marsh towards Piper Marsh (RM) and another was on Huxter Well cell 1b before flying on to Piper Marsh in the afternoon. Although the Field Officer put out sprats at Piper Marsh today, the Bitterns were not seen taking them. Mother Drain and Willow Pool had a Water Rail. A Willow Tit was at Willow Pool feeding station and another called at the main gate. Siskin 20, Redpoll 4, and Goldcrest 1 in Black Carr Wood, with many Redwings also in the Wood feeding amongst the leaf litter.
Late news for Monday, 11th January, was a 1st-winter male BLACK-THROATED THRUSH Turdus atrogularis near Piper Marsh Hide (KF). A rarity description is being sent to BBRC. There are only around 40 previous records of this species in the UK. Potteric Carr Nature Reserve

Great sentiments but should'nt this apply wherever we watch birds.I understand the finders have been very good with visiting birders. They have showed the pictures to other locals and have warned them of the extra vistors. On that basis, as "birders" we need to be on our best behaviour and make these people feel that they have made the right decision in putting news out. I only takes one idiot (and there are more than that) to spoil it for everybody else!
Remember if this bird had been found in Harrowgate, people would have been sworn to silence!!
Watching birds in peoples gardens is about goodwill and not a right! :cat:
Great photos of a super bird.

Been up to Wigtwizzle today on the way home from uni in the hope of getting a few xbill but no luck. Similar story yesterday when I went on a wild goose chase after the white-front at Mickletown, no luck!
Today though whilst driving on New Lane past Broomhead res I came across 3 very unusual male pheasants. Very dark all over. After doing a brief bit of research since getting home I have realised they are 'black pheasants' often bred for release. Lovely birds, anyone else seen them in that area?
