Upton Warren (130 Viewers)

And not much to add for the roost.
However of interest of the assembled BHG 2 were ringed
Juv- White ring, right leg, 21A5
Adult- White ring, right leg, 2K44
i havent submitted these yet, but from the numbers/ring colour etc, i am expecting both of these birds to have came from Cotswald water park at some point.
29 Curlew roosted and a common tern roosted with the BHG

Is it a white darvic with black writing? Both the BHG's with those rings I've had at Upton have been from Poland!

Autumn All-Day Birdwatch

I am conscious that we havent fixed a date for the Autumn All-Day birdwatch; how does Saturday 3rd September (the weekend after the Bank Holiday) sound to everyone? I am sure Mike will advise from the stats of previous years if this is likely to be more productive date that the 10th.

The slight fly-in-the-ointment is the replacement of the Tower Hide at the Flashes with a new double-decker facility which is due to take place in August, during which time it will be unavailable for approx two weeks. I will try to establish from the Trust next week the exact dates proposed; hopefully it will be completed by the Bank Holiday weekend.

Phil

Steve N / Geoff W - are you up for a rematch at Belvide and Middleton respectively? (Upton will win one eventually!)

Hi Phil,

That's the date the Belvide day list will be done. Sorry I've not been in touch about it sooner, but we've only confirmed this date ourselves today, after checking the availability to folk who want to take part.
Hope this date is OK to you Upton boys and girls.

Cheers Steve

I am likely to be away that weekend, but will mention it to the Midd Lakes birders. We should also be getting our first hide in September so this will make a big difference for us. (I've been told it's going to cost £50,000. personally I'd rather have 50 x £1000 hides).

So you've finally managed to obtain a visa to leave the Midlands John;)?

With regard to wader passage at UW and the recent run of Blackwits - some of you will be familiar with Martin Garners Blog - he is keen on races and subspecies and his site is fascinating and has certainly made me look closer both local and abroad. His latest post is about Blackwits and makes fascinating reading for those that are interested in subspecifics............:t:

Hi Steve - fingers crossed we will be OK for the 3rd but will get an update from Trust re the hide situation and let you know.

Cheers

Couple of pics from The Flashes this afternoon.
The Greenshank spent most of its time walking and feeding amongst the BHG on the first flash. It did come to have it`s photo taken but only as close as the channel to the left of the hide, and then hid under the bank for a few minutes before flying back to the first flash.

Been having a further think about the Common Terns at the Moors Pool.

We have certainly lost the fourth brood and the fifth sitting bird. What I cant work out in my mind is what happened to the third brood. There are certainly two sets of fledged chicks. Either these are Broods 1 and 2 with the third lost or Brood 1 has already left the site and those present are Broods 2 and 3. The third brood was first seen on the 26th so they would be at least 21 days old now; the youngsters present yesterday seem to me to be a little too big and advanced to be this age but I would welcome anyone else's thoughts / experience.

Hi Phil,

Terry Norledge and I saw the 4 fledged juv Common terns on saturday plus at least one other smaller chick. I couldn't see any of the smaller ones yesterday so I assumed they were hiding. However, predation is always a possibility. I was also wondering whether we've had four or six birds fledge so far. Only visiting at weekends makes it difficult to judge from my perspective.

I too only saw four fledges juveniles yesterday afternoon, but no chicks or a stting adult. However the weather was pretty foul yesterday, so any chicks could have been under cover. As to what may have happened to one of broods 1,2 & 3, perhaps Phil's suggestion of the oldest brood departing may be feasible. Also predation may be a possibility, but with fledged chicks would they not be able to escape the attentions of large gulls or Grey Herons? Or perhaps they don't perceive there to be a threat form either of these two sources and therefore leave themselves open to the danger?

Mike

P.S. nothing new/different to report up to 18.15 yesterday - Greenshank and Dunlin still present on Flashes and three Shovelers on the Moors Pool. Not sure about the Tufted broods, one was definitely down to five (feeding around the central islands) and I only had a very brief glimpse of the other in the south-west area and saw 6 or 7 chicks.

Hello everybody

Hello all you Uptonites out there. Have been following your excellent forum for some time now and have eventually managed (fingers crossed) to get aboard - it goes without saying Upton is truly awesome, some may say it rivals even a few East-coast sites, certainly the birders are as knowledgable and definitely more friendly. I manage to pop down now and then and if the diary (aka, wife & kids) permit, I would love to join in on one of your famous "all-dayers" - I hear the bacon sarnies and cake selections are second to none - keep up your excellent management work and watch the birds drop in.

Good to have you on board Oriole Boy - think your place on the All-Dayer is well secured although not sure we can promise you a Red Kite this autumn.

Wecome to the forum, Oriole Boy. All are welcome on the all-dayers - the more the merrier. Hopefully, we can set a date for the autumn one soon. We always look forward to a good turn-out on the day (both birds and people). :t:

4 Blackwits and Greenshank still today, per Worcesterbirding.
