Yorkshire Birding (70 Viewers)

Anyone got an idea what's offshore at the moment, Sunday looking bright and calm so could be a fantastic day for photography from the boat - if there's anything out there. Otherwise it's a lot of brass for a few gulls.

Seems it's still there, I had a trip down first thing and failed to find it on the stretch it was occupying so left before more dogs got there. Reported later so good news. Did see a Ring necked Parakeet fly over though.

Went on for a walk around 27, typical autumn fair, blackcap, chiffchaff, sprawk, and the highlight two Redwing.

East Yorkshire Waders

Had a cracking moring today-first went down to Pat Haven managed 20 minutes on the lagoon before it flooded curlew sandpiper was the best bird along with merlin.
very quiet at Spurn so went to Hornsea Mere. had some good flight views of the pec sand and then closer views from a boat looking at the spit off swan island.
Also saw the great white egret.
Supporting cast in the form of little and med gull.
More shots on the blog.

Flight shots of a Pec, lucky you. Been sat in goose shit again waiting for the Pugneys bird to fly - it won't. Approached to 5' this afternoon, probably been closer with others, runs a few feet further when disturbed. Macro lens required at this rate. Nice pics Martin, was tempted to go east today so relieved it didn't deliver the goods.

was at pugneys today until 10-30 am , showing well to about 10 ft. it looks settled . go for it

Thanks. I got it at 9.00 this morning. I'd been waiting by the hide (locked) for half an hour until the guy who came to open up told me there was a group stood round it by the visitor centre. I then drove over to Potteric and got Wood Sand and lesser spotted woodpecker to make it 201 for the year.

Dropped in on Sands Lane GP this afternoon as I was passing. Now a fully fledged maggot drowning venue called Ladywood lakes, fenced in, fotunately with wire. Could be interesting if the RBG turns up as all the gulls were either pushed to the side of the lake near the road or onto the smaller pond on the other side.

Why is Eccup so poor for birds? From when I started in '82 I can only recall a Great Northern, which I got back in '82/83, a Red-throated, a Temminck's Stint and a Grey Phal. It used to get white-winged gulls but they've dried up now. Generally not great for such an expanse of water. It rarely even gets the rarer grebes.

I may have missed the odd bird but pretty poor fair when you match it against the other inland reservoirs. Take Grafham Water - x 2 Grey Phal's and a Sab's just at the moment.

For me it lacks mud, but then so do reservoirs like Farmoor, that still get much better records.

It's hard, and in places impossible to work, but some people do work it.

It doesn't really have islands or resting posts to attract terns like some do.

It ought to be a better local patch than it is.

Thoughts?

Great White Egret this afternoon!

All things LDV

Spent a couple of hours on the LDV light and weather pityful,(how can two back to back days be so different???) heron, buzzard, reed bunts, and a nice roe deer, then watched a hobby systematically chasing and catching dragon flies. just need some water!!!!

Was wondering if there is an archive of records from Spurn anywhere. The oldest entry on the site is Aug 2005.

If not online, is there a publication available?

Cheers

A good one that summarises the occurrence of each species is: The Birds of Spurn Peninsula: A Comprehensive Checklist, 2nd Edition by Geoff Neal, 2007
