Upton Warren (129 Viewers)

I don't know if everyone is aware but the tool shed was broken into and we had all our strimmers and power tools nicked.
This is not an appeal. But I would like to thank one of our members and we all know him for his generous £40 donation towards replacements. Modesty forbids him from being named.
Thanks ............:t:

I echo that - a very generous and honourable gesture.

The Flashes till dark (my first roost session of the year)
Gadwall pr, shoveler (male), teal c60, Mallard 30+
Curlew 25 (all landed 30 yards in front of the hide just before dark), lapwing 50+, oystercatcher pr (4 on the reserve), The BHG roost is now building up to 800 birds tonight many practising nest building. I was sporting a white plastic ring 2H72. A redpoll flew over and a few winter thrushes roosted in the hedgerows.

2H72 was also recorded last year on the 29th April and 23rd August; this bird was ringed in the nest at Somerford Keynes (Cotswold Water Park) on the 2nd June 2008.

Water Pipit

Water Pipits have become very scarce at Upton Warren in recent years with just one record in twelve years; the species was nearly annual between the late 1980s and the late 1990s. Occurences are heavily skewed in favour of spring passage with most records in late March and April in this analysis of records from 1970 to 2011.

great to be back at the Flashes
NB: the left side large window catch is dodgy. I have attached a sign 'Please do NOT open'. I will contact the trust tomorrow. I have cleaned the windows so you can see through it until we get it sorted.

and here's a pic of the pair of Gadwall at the Flashes;

Also a large flock of Starling appeared from behind the sewage works around mid day

We had a power cut yesterday while I was uploading my images from the camera to the PC (couldn't have happened at a worse time). If rescue-able I suspect my only decent image will be of the Gadwalls too. But I'm struggling to retrieve any that were still on the camera's disc at the moment.

I think I've saved the images. It was interesting to see that the Sailing Complex had a work party operating yesterday...

Here are a few shots rescued from the disc. There was some significant large gull action and I include the Fieldfare image purely as it's not common to get an opportunity to photograph this species from the hide. This was in the hedge adjacent to the gate as you look out of the R/H Flashes window.
There was a lot of bird song from the more common species (especially when the sun was out) and, like Gert's fine example, the Gadwall pair were showing well.

Actually I don't like the Robin photo it's over-sharpened. I'll have another go... no, it's the contrast between the bird and the blue background. This is now unsharpened.

Dave J and I struggled over the identity of one of these bird when perched due to the grotty light levels (it ended up being positively identified as a Juv Herring Gull when it flew, later. This was taken before Dave arrived and could have helped... I don't mind saying that I'm unsure of each birds identity as I'm not sure which one stayed on site...

To add to John's count I had a Green Woodpecker behind the east hide it was showing really well, also two Goldcrests on the North Moors among the small stand of conifer :t:

Out of interest John, why were you sporting a white plastic ring

Not Upton Warren related as such, but, on this day when the Avocets returned in numbers, this article has a photo of an Avocet in it and we've been subject to this habit in the past... so there's your link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2106945/Rare-egg-thief-handed-wildlife-ASBO-year-ban-Scotland.html#comments

I'm afraid this is where my tolerance really does run out. ;)

Perhaps we should have a mugs gallery of known convicted egg thieves put up in the hides with a caption 'If you see any of these men hanging around UW report them to the police immediately'. Probably run foul of some human rights law though.
