Just had a look at the (current) weather forecast for the All-Dayer. Cloudy but not too cold over-night (no need to snuggle up to Gary, Craig ;)) followed by a day of sunshine and westerly winds with temperatures peaking at around 13C. Not classic conditions to produce a big total; HOWEVER there is an interesting window between 7am and 9am of much heavier cloud cover and potentially drizzle.

War and Peace Thurs 2nd April

A relatively peaceful Day both on the Moors and The Flashes yesterday - at least while we were there. Tried to turn an incoming Curlew on the Flashes into a Whimbel but couldn't quite manage it. Ah well.
On The Moors - West Hide - witnessed a prospective takeover for a Coot's mate. According to the t.v. expert the other night the mate gets involved and stops the fight when she chooses!!
Set of pics taken from a sequence showing fight. Interloper finally slopes off- not shown- after mate has a word in ear and peace is restored in our time.

How many avocets are there on the Flashes?

I believe we have in excess of 25 avocets. On three occasions I have counted 26+. This morning with the help of two obliging birders, Dave and Ian, we counted 10 from the cuckoo hide and about 21 from the main hide. Obviously they fly around to some extent and the count may not be accurate but I regularly find 7 or 9 on the first Flash (Johnny-no-friends and 3 or 4 pairs). They are not easy to see as they are spread around the edge of the Flash and also in among the gulls on the low-lying islands. The ones on the Second Flash are easier to find even if they won't keep still. It may be significant that one pair was mating just in front of the hide this morning. Would this indicate that they were new arrivals?

Thanks for the generous support we have already received towards our 'fighting fund' ....we have also just received sponsorship of 50p per bird !!!!:eek!::t:
from one of our regulars thanks ***.

If that doesn't spur us on nothing will.

There are 3 lads staying over night tomorrow as part of the 24hour guard on the reserve and at the same time listening out for owls and dare I say Crakes;)
The ringing team will be on site early on to set up the nets. These nets are in areas that are open and no habitat will be damaged or flattened. At least one net will be in the cut reed blocks and others in the north moors. The north end of the trail will possibly have a net as well. Fergus and Sean will put up signs indicating where the nets are.
For anyone who is interested in ringing, Fergus will be more than pleased to allow you to watch and photograph the birds being ringed.
Tomorrow I will be putting up the 'score boards' 1 each at the Moors and Flashes main hides.
Anybody who wants to come along on Saturday , just turn up and help us find some birds. Text me or any of the lads if you get a decent bird. It might be worth checking the score boards first and then go and find something we need for the day.
Bacon and mushroom sarnies will be cooked in the concrete hide should be enough for all comers (is that right Mike:smoke:) so apologies to any vegetarians that go in there on Saturday.
Any cake cookers will be more than welcome as long as they bring a cake8-P:eat:
So here's to a bumper total, to give Steve Nuttall's Belvide Boys a run for their money.B :)
Mike is bringing some A4 check lists I am sure he will let you have one.
:t:John
we will have a collection bucket on site if any one wants to make donations

Please excuse my ignorance, but is it wise to net birds in the breeding season?? Wouldnt later on when young are fledged be better?

Rob

You kept that quiet Rob; best count of Shelduck since 2006 when the breeding pair and their ten fledged young were present. Twelve adults were present on the 17th May 1970.

The Hen Pool Hide

At this time the hide is coming into its own: today I had some stunningly close views of a water rail there.

I'm sorry I can't be at the all-dayer tomorrow, but best wishes for 90+ species and 10 warblers.

Peter
