A lovely day yesterday... but trying to rain today!!

Mowing, weeding, pruning, planting, re-potting, feeding, watering etc. can spoil a lovely day. What's the point of gardening anyway?

Cuckoo, Nightjar, Tawny Owl, Snipe, Curlew, 9 species of Warbler...and I didn't need any binoculars! Not that I'd say no to a new pair.

I received an e-mail containing a list of triva items about my state and thought that it might be fun to use them as my daily entry. Are they all correct? Beats me!.

1. Arizona has 3,928 mountain peaks and summits, more mountains than any one of the other Mountain States (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming).

Friday entry, May 16th.

Yes. But they are not as big as ours.

By bigger I assume you mean higher. Depends on how you look at it!

From http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0001792.html

AZ highest point - 12,633 ft - Mt Humphrey north of Flagstaff
AZ lowest point - 70 ft - Colorado River near Yuma

Height Difference - 12,563 ft

CO highest point - 14,433 ft - Mt Elbert
CO lowest point - 3,350 ft - Arkansas River

Height Difference - 11,083 ft

That puts the mountains "in" AZ 1,480 ft higher. :t:

Strangely enough, I think Nevada is often credited with being the most mountainous state in the lower 48. Nevada has 172 mountain summits with 2,000 feet (610 m) of prominence. Nevada ranks second in the US, behind Alaska, and ahead of California, Montana, and Washington. This makes Nevada the "Most Mountainous" state in the country, at least by this measure.

But as denco said, ours are bigger!

Interesting, I do not think of NV as a mountain state. You are right NV mountains are bigger than AZ on both accounts.

NV highest point - 13,140 ft - Boundry Peak
NV lowest point - 479 - Colorado River

Height Difference - 12,661 ft

Such large geographical differences are great for birding since they provide habitat for a large variety of birds.

By contrast, Lithuania where I reside has no point even reaching 300 metres ... which I think makes the country the No.1 pancake in all Europe, even the Netherlands has higher altitude!

You made me Google Lithuania to find out more!

On with the AZ triva:

2. All New England, plus the state of Pennsylvania would fit inside Arizona.

Entry for Saturday, May17th.

No post today?
Your thoughts have gone astray!
The end of your hopes,
the end of all your dreams.

My post - on time!
I love this dirty rhyme:
My post stands quite alone,
all company has gone.

So all that's left
is a hope quite unfounded,
set on a post
you made three long days ago …

No post today?
Your chances flown away!
You're standing quite forlorn,
it's twilight, it's not dawn!

But how could you know
just what this message means?
If you're surfing elsewhere,
my post will pass unseen.

So all that's left
is a hope quite unfounded,
set on a post
you made three long days ago …

No post today?
it wasn't always so.
You too were in the game,
for Prime HD you'd go.

In June you will see,
my words are true and plain:
The Zen Ray shines on me,
in darkness you remain!

So all that's left
is a hope quite unfounded,
set on a post
you made three long days ago.

So all that's left
is a hope quite unfounded,
set on a post
you made three long days ago …

Right now it's 52* F, damp and overcast in Cloudy Valley, going down to 39* tonight, so I hope our listeners didn't put away their winter blankets in flattened, vacuum storage bags under their beds. If so, break the seal and suck 'em out, otherwise, face the wrath of your mate's Popsicle toes.

This is Brock Miller for WDIM-TV Weather coming to you from the top of Mount Nittany. Have a good night and a more pleasant tomorrow.
