Few Moths for ID Please (1 Viewer)

1 Agree
2 & 3 Clepsis consimilana
4 Not sure it's identifiable from that photo

David

Thanks David - no, didn't think 4 would be identifiable to be fair but thought I'd drop it in just in case. I didn't 'do' micros when first had dabble with moths years ago but trying to this time - they certainly aren't easy!

3 more from this morning...

1. Lozotaeniodes forsterana?
2. Looks like Caloptilia stigmatella but book says Apr-May...?
3+4. Celypha sp?

For me:-
1. Yes
2. Yes - stigmatella
3 and 4. Celypha lacunana

All the best

Thanks Paul - had a look on UK moths and flight time was fine on there for stigmatella...if I'd checked that first I would have been OK with that one.

A few more from today, sorry all!

1. Willow Beauty again?
2. presuming this Ermine isn't identifiable to species...?
3+4. Small micro - seemed a few in the privet hedges today but can't ID it.

Few moths

By the way, Tachystola acroxantha is a decent record. It's not out of range in Wolverhamton, but is shown to be a 'local' species, probably an Australian moth import which has spread.

Andy M.
Hi andy I explained to shane why I can,t download onto
The forum but do so in the gallery instead due to desizer Issues and
Malware which damaged my pc, the tachystola acroxantha has similar
Markings to one I downloaded on to the gallery but its a lot paler in
Background colour I was wondering if it was a cream wave it was
Photographed in june in daylight on a ivy leaf perhaps you might know

Coal tit.

Thanks again, David - much appreciated! Just had a look on UK moths and both look quite obvious now...the joy of being a newbie (again!) I remember having this problem with birds 30 years ago...and sometimes still do!

Must admit this must be the most helpful and friendly ID forum on 'birdforum' with experts more than happy to advise the newbies like me each time...:t:

Umming and arrrring over these two, so I'll have to ask for more expert advice again, please...

1+2. same moth from yesterday
3. one from this morning.

Many thanks

All look like Celypha striana to me.

Cheers Brian - that was my preferred option, so thanks for confirming. 3 more from this am - 1+2 I think I'm OK with, 3 looks distinctive enough but can't pin it down on UK moths...

1. Smoky Wainscot?
2. Blastobasis adustella?
3. Not sure...

I've never totally got to grips with Swammerdamias/Paraswammerdamias. I have an intention to build into a checklist spreadsheet at some time the distinguishing features and confusion species.

But this moth seems unlikely to be nebulella as that shows (normally) lines of black spots including along the wing edge. So I favour caesiella and if there is a coppery termen, pyrella.

All the best

No 2 is Epermenia chaerophyllella

David

Thanks very much David - I'm guessing that means 1 and 3 aren't good enough shots for conclusive ID? I've got a load of unidentified so far from this mornings batch! I'll have a go at what I can before I post for more help...sorry!

EDIT: thinking 3 might actually be Ancylis achatana?

Thanks Paul, if they are tough for you they are a positive nightmare for me but I'm determined to give both macro and micro a go this time...I'm on holiday from a week on Monday so everyone can have a well earned break from their much appreciated assistance...:t:

Definitely no coppery termen, so most likely caesiella.

Yes it is - I thought it looked familiar!

David

Thanks again, David - I got there in the end with that one!

Another batch from the morning - the thundery showers of last night hadn't put them off...

1+2. Fan-foot?
3. Common Pug?
4. Carcina quercana?
5. lurking in the top right of this (poor) shot - an Acleris forsskaleana?

I'd agree with all of those.

David

Thanks again, David - much appreciated.

Left with this 'Motley Crew' of unidentified, mainly tiny micros, from the weekend - if any are identifiable to species any help would be welcome.

1. looks like Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner?
2-5. can't put a name on any...

I had what looked like a Diamond-back Moth in the garden earlier on my Buddleia - UK moths details 'often abundant migrant at coastal locations' so I'm assuming this is likely, even this far inland?
