Who's the top, night lister (all night birds,Nightjars,Nighthawks etc) now James, you or Ashley? I wouldn't count that American bloke who ticks them on call alone.here's from what I can think of, probably missed a few, there isn't a better moment in birding than spotlighting an owl. Though Frogmouths and Nightjars are up there with them.

Update: Now at 90, thanks to trips to New Zealand and Indonesia.I'm at 81. Up from 54 the last time this thread was active.
Oh good...these are back. I now stand at 25 owls, with three new species from Ecuador this past summer, Mottled and both Pacific and Cloud-Forest Pygmy. STILL haven't ventured to Sax Zim bog, but I might have an opportunity this January (would be been more likely if I wasn't on Furlough). Furlough also nukes any plans for Europe this summer, so none of those owls either. Still don't have Long-eared Owl either!Well...we resurrected hummers, herons, and shorebirds, might as well update this as well!
My list currently stands at 2 Tytonidae and 22 Strigidae. ABA owls in bold
These include:
American Barn Owl (ABA)
African Grass Owl (Kenya)
Northern Boobook (Japan)
Morepork (NZ)
Powerful Owl (Australia)
Elf Owl (ABA)
Northern Saw-whet Owl (ABA)
Burrowing Owl (ABA)
Little Owl (UK)
Ferruginous Pygmy Owl (Panama)
Short-eared Owl (ABA)
Long-eared Owl (ABA)
Eastern Screech-Owl (ABA)
Choco Screech-Owl (Panama)
Western Screech-Owl (ABA)
Whiskered Screech-Owl (ABA)
Spectacled Owl (Panama)
Tawny Owl (UK)
Ural Owl (Japan)
Barred Owl (ABA)
Blakiston's Fish Owl (Japan)
Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (Kenya)
Great Horned Owl (ABA)
Snowy Owl (ABA)
I live something like 8 hours away from Sax-Zim Bog, so there is really no reason why I shouldn't have Great Gray and Northern Hawk-Owl, other than I hate car birding by myself and I hate cold weather birding, and Sax Zim involves both! Not sure what the next owl is...I could get lucky with either of those two species if I put the effort in or maybe even a Boreal Owl, and failing that I might be able to add a few species in Ecuador this summer. Still need Long-eared Owl for my Wisconsin list, so hopefully pick that up this winter.
And now at 92 after my trip to Ethiopia in November.Update: Now at 90, thanks to trips to New Zealand and Indonesia.
