    2018 Orchid Thread

Here in Surrey - Bee Orchids starting to go over, Fragrant gone over, GBO gone over, Pyramidal looking good. I visited Mike's current namesakes as well, but unfortunately I don't think any will flower here this year, a combination of them being eaten, and it being too dry I think...

    Mystery metallic green bee

Thanks folks! I was pretty certain it wasn't a beetle, but you might be right; I guess we'll never know for sure!

    Mystery metallic green bee

I saw a large (bumble bee sized) bee, metallic green, fast, strong flying. It was definitely not a dragonfly. Seen in Datchet, Berkshire, UK today. Does anyone have any ideas as to the ID please? I haven't seen one like it before! Apologies but I didn't manage to photograph this one at all. It...

    2017 UK orchids

Military at their prime in the usual location in BBOWTland, as were the GBO and Fly. CSO just coming out. One Green Hairstreak. The Monkeys are just going over and not in very high numbers at the usual location in BBOWTland; but Lady x Monkey hybrid swarm is looking excellent - a few of those...

Not as yet, no. In most years I'd expect them out in early June.

Man are just starting to come out in Surrey now; but probably at least a week (more likely two) before they're at their best.

    2017 UK orchids

Mils just starting to come into flower in Bucks, probably about two weeks away from their prime yet though. GWOs just starting to go over slightly in Oxon, but still spectacular! I found this one with another unusual lip variant - vaguely reminds me of Orchis papilionacea:

    2017 UK orchids

Does anyone have a good publically accessible Green Winged site in Surrey they wouldn't mind sharing, please? Currently I drive to Bucks or Kent, and that's quite a long trip for something I feel I should be able to see much closer to home... PM's would be appreciated!

    Marsh Orchid, UK.

Yes, as per the others, I'd vote for D praetermissa. If there were spots on the leaves consider the hybrid option.

    Slipper orchid Id.

I'm not an expert, but I think Paphiopedilum callosum would be a reasonable candidate; and if so, it is a native species of Malaysia.

    2016 UK Orchids

Bee Orchids just coming out in Surrey most in bud; the Man Orchids are just starting to go over; White Helleborines just going over; Chalk Fragrant any stage between full bud and prime condition.

Park Gate update: Monkey at their best. Early Purples gone over, one or two still good though. Just one Lady, looking good. A number of Fly, mostly past their best. Common Tway prime to early. Couldn't see anything else though.
