Did changing to a lighter 32mm over 42mm bino really make that much difference?

Wow, brilliant. Think I might use my 8x32s more than my 8x20s now. How have I not thought about my grip before!!

Bird App for South America - iPhone

I’m looking for a birding app that covers Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The only one I have found is this one: Birds of South America by I.M.D. Publicacion C.A. Anybody know how good it is (£18 is quite expensive if it’s not up to par) or any other suggestions?

    Mauritius - which Heron?

Thanks, Andrew. I did think it might be this one - looking at my South African bird book but it just didn't look 'greenish' and again the legs in the book show yellow rather than red. Ann

    Mauritius - which Heron?

When I went to Mauritius I didn't have a decent bird book to cover this area. I have these pictures of a small heron which I thought might be a Little Heron but the feet are quite pink rather than yellow. Any clues?

    Are Scientific Names Unique?

The purpose of my database is to record my lifer list and as it is only for me I don't have to be overly precise about keeping scientific names up to date. It would probably be worthwhile putting in the total bird population to start with and then I can select from this list for the different...

    Are Scientific Names Unique?

Oh no, bknownd, didn't want to know that. Oh well, I think I will stick with the scientific name as the key and sort out any discrepencies as they come up. It shouldn't happen often??!! I have been using avibase, Gordon, for my lists so they should be more or less up to date.

    Are Scientific Names Unique?

Thanks, Delia Actually, after delving a bit more I found the answer. Should have been a bit more thorough |:$| Over time, I should have a great database and it means that I can make sure a lifer is a lifer! Might go the whole hog and add pictures when (and if!) I have time.

    Are Scientific Names Unique?

I have started an Access database of birds from countries I have been to. To make sure that I don't repeat a bird in my total bird list, I have used the scientific name as a key. However, when I did some cross referencing from the different country lists, the actual names of many birds with...

    Cyprus - Sardinian Warbler?

Great - another to add to my list. I was quite disappointed because there were many small birds in Cyprus that were just so quick and the foliage so thick I just couldn't be sure of an identification. Also, as my husband isn't interested in birding (only photographing the big birds like...

    Cyprus - Sardinian Warbler?

Sorry, folks, I got this off my camcorder so they are not great. My best guess is that it is a Sardinian Warbler.

Where to buy and try in London/Surrey

Thanks for all the help. In the end I got a brand new pair of 8 x 32BN Trinovids. The camera shop in the town near where I live had some old stock which they were prepared to sell at the old price. I phoned up Kay and they said they would equal the price. Well, as getting to Kay was going to...

Please give Never and always birding advice.

Never tell your HUSBAND how much you paid for those bins! (yup, he thinks they are £100 cheaper and he's still shocked) Always take the receipt out of the bag!

How do I start my Life List

Great Advise! Fantastic advise. Thanks. I like Mike's idea of keeping a separate list for each country. I can pretty much use my list from South Africa in Nov last year because it was the first time I put the date and place next to all the birds I had seen. However, my lists from the US...

How do I start my Life List

I really love birds but have always done bird watching on a sort of adhoc basis. I have so many interests that this one has tended to be in the background. In 1989 I studied in the US for a year and had a free subject slot so decided to fill it with an Ornithology course. I realise now how...

Where to buy and try in London/Surrey

Ah Yes Ah, now that you mention it, I think this is where I got my bins 3 year ago after some good help from here (just couldn't remember). Unfortunately, what with working in London during the week, Saturday it will have to be!
