    West Thailand birds

How fascinating the colour/plummage differences in a few at least species of Thai birds. I did think the tail appeared quite long but perhaps that is a misinterpretation. John, thanks for posting those photos. s

    West Thailand birds

In large part to bump up, I agree on both. The wing patch, longish tail relative to body, grey head without any yellow and the yellow chin exclude I believe any other minivets and are all good for long-tailed minivet female. The lack of any pale "armpit" seems to indicate greater rather than...

Sunbird female id help pls. S Thailand

Thank you Graham, I did see a male Crimson Sunbird in the area, and a van Hasselt's. Your explanation about lighting helps as the way the photo looks only green-tailed and fork-tailed seemed to have such a white tail, neither seeming likely in Songkhla as you point out. Much appreciated steve

Sunbird female id help pls. S Thailand

Thank you Butty, and not to disagree but to understand better, the diagram and description in Robson's appeared to me to be much darker breast. I know that not every bird is "text book" and my colour vision is not the same as others, so in asking to learn, do those points you have made override...

Sunbird female id help pls. S Thailand

This photo was taken near Hat Yai, Songkhla province of Southern Thailand, on the top of a hill - at the stainless steel chedi should anyone be that familiar with the local:) Looking at Robinson, all of the candidates are described as having yellowish bellies, but this appears very white to...

Lesser Sand Plover Bangkok April 2024

Hi, Aladdin, this is not a propos to this thread but I wanted to thank you for your very excellent website which I made much use of in a short stay in Oman in March. It was very helpful in my birding there and I thank you for putting all the effort that you obviously did into it. very much...

Is this Sardinian warbler or Menteries’s warbler please?

Well good luck then:) Hope they sing for you. Are you in Dohuk then? I have only seen Delicate but that was in Baghdad and Erbil and around Dhi Qir.

On location it should be Delicate.

I believe you are correct on all 3. steve

Pha Taem NP Thailand - 2 x Flycatcher, Purple Sunbird...?

I think the first is Asian Brown, given the eye ring, the second is as you suggest and the third is an Ornate Sunbird given the yellow breast and throat. Though I don't recall ever seeing one with that should patch so as always I could be wrong:) steve

    Goa, India - Pipit identification

Hi, I am answering in large part to bump it up and to learn, but in my inexpert opinion it is Paddyfields, based on the hind toe not being extraordinarily long and that the stripes on the back merge, both I believe are marks of Paddyfield. But as I mentioned I am struggling to id the two where I...

    Sandplover - Cyprus

Thank you John. As you may recall I have posted winter plumage plovers on here requesting ID help, which you and others have generously given. I frequently see sand plovers in Thailand during the winter and struggle with identifying them so was looking for "short cuts":) I was thinking of Hairy...

    Sandplover - Cyprus

If I may ask a question about differentiating between the two: based on an obviously small sample of photos, it seems to me that the length of the bill in Greater is equal or slightly larger than the distance between the bill base and the back of the eye and the height of the base of the bill is...
