    Macedonia?

Prespa is a great place to be - Pelicans there, plus other good water birds and migrants in April. The Babuna Gorge, Demir Kapija - great for raptors, Rock Partridge etc. Lake Dojran is really splendid for water birds. Then Sar Planina (Mountain) north of Skopje holds great raptors and other...

    Ruppell's Warbler in Crete

Does anyone have any information about specific places where Ruppell's Warbler breeds on Crete. I have read a very general 'south coast' and descriptions of the kinds of habitats it prefers, but I will have fairly limited time in April and would really like to add this bird to my Life List...

    Immature Gull on the Danube

I have put this question to two UK experts, and their opinion is that the long slender bill, white head and tail pattern both point towards it being Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans), which Gerard Gorman's 'Birds of Hungary' gives as being a faily common winter visitor, and very rare breeder...

    Long-tailed Duck on the Danube

Pleased to end the year with a new species for my life list!! I went out to an area on the left bank of the Danube in northern Budapest this morning, as the nice www.birding.hu website has said that there were several Long-tailed Ducks (Clangula hyemalis) to be seen. It was an immaculate day...

    Immature Gull on the Danube

I was out birding (to see Long-tailed Duck, actually) on the Danube in northern Budapest this afternoon, and saw this Gull amongst the many Black-headed and few Common Gulls. I take it to be a 2nd Winter bird - either Caspian Gull (Larus cachinans) or Yellow-legged Gull (L. michahelis). Can...

    Geometer for ID

Thanks Andy... I hadn't noted how much variation there can be in Erannis defoliara wing patterns....this one could hardly be called "Mottled", could it?! In Varga's 'Macrolepidoptera of Hungary', which uses photos of pinned specimens a la Skinner, the non-mottled form is so pale and unmottled...

    Orchids Of Crete

Spili is the place everyone goes... Buy a copy of Jeff Collman's 'Walks with Crete's Spring Flowers' (Beechwood Press, 2003)..... but as with much of the Mediterranean at the end of March/beginning of April, it is difficult not to see lots of orchids everywhere!!! Best wishes David

    Geometer for ID

Please can you help with the Geometer below. It seems very close to one of the Agriopis species from the shape and markings, but not quite right for either A. aurantiara or A. marginaria. Caught in the living room the other night, done for by a Wolf Spider, I think. Best David

    Grasshoppers - Portugal

I think you're right about the second one, John. It's Oedipoda caerulescens. Lovely to watch. I've just seen lots of them in Greece, and they're frequent throughout southern Europe. The first one is an amazing insect, really beautiful..... it's really frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a...

    Hungary October 2016

Imperial Eagles wander in winter and quite often wander over Hotobagy, and White-tailed Eagles are not difficult to see on the Hortobagy. Ural Owl in Zemplen is not easy. You would need local knowledge or help from a local guide. October is good for the Cranes - very spectacular, Great...
