Bearded Vultures and Golden Eagle in Hohe Tauern

I've been over the Hochalpenstrasse twice (several years apart) and saw Snowfinches both times (at Fuscher torl and Kaiser Franz-Josefs-Hohe). I don't recall seeing any raptors. Lots of marmots though!

    Birding at Loch of Kinnordy

The tag looked that sort of colour but was only on the right wing. I couldn't see any tag at all on the left wing.

    Birding at Loch of Kinnordy

Visited Kinnordy yesterday for the first time in ages. It was pretty quiet, but a female Marsh Harrier put in an appearance from the swamp hide, hunting over a cereal field beyond the loch. It had a green wing tag on the right wing and I wondered if this meant it was one of the local birds or...

    Marsh Warbler? Lake Annecy

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

    Marsh Warbler? Lake Annecy

Thanks for that. My first thought on hearing this was also Melodious, but I should probably have said that I could see the bird singing and it was a brown, unstreaked Acrocephalus warbler, so definitely reed or marsh. It was also confusingly perched on the top of a phragmites reed stem, which...

    Marsh Warbler? Lake Annecy

Can anyone confirm if this is a Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) singing in this video? It was at Bout du Lac nature reserve at Lake Annecy, France the week before last. I have no previous experience of the species and my experience of singing Reed Warblers is limited to occasional...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I stopped to have a look for the Blyth's Reed Warbler that had been reported at Port Elphinstone as I was passing through Inverurie this morning. After some initial confusion due to a faulty grid reference I found the spot by the Don, near the sewage works. The bird was appearing regularly on...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Just saw a photo posted on Facebook by Moorfield House b&b , Boat of Garten, which seems to show a 2 barred crossbill in their garden yesterday.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

The nest site at Lochter, Oldmeldrum is publicly known and occasionally mentioned in the press. Elsewhere there are a couple of sites that seem to be well known locally though not usually publicised.

I can't see the photos on that link as it's a closed group. I assume they are the same photos as on this page? https://www.facebook.com/cairngormsnature

    Lothian Birding

I've had a very enjoyable couple of days working in Lothian. Yesterday I was in the Pentland Hills and saw a pair of Nuthatches at Woodhouselee. As I had been up early in the morning doing a lek count on Deeside before heading south I managed the unusual double of Capercaillie and Nuthatch in...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I imagine that Ravens have a hard time spreading east through some of the more heavily keepered parts of the area. I see them most times I head over the Lecht or the Cairnwell but much less frequently to the east (although I saw one near Aboyne last week). Eventually I suspect enough will get...

Is this a stoat or a weasel?

Isn't anyone going to do the joke? I agree that the tail looks cut off.

Lac du Der and Foret D'Orient

There is information about the area here: http://www.champagne-ardenne-tourism.co.uk/faun/fauna-flora/ornithology-birdwatching-sites.aspx Recent crane counts are available here: http://champagne-ardenne.lpo.fr/grus-grus/index.htm# I visited the Foret d'orient briefly last summer - not really...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I don't seem to have done much birding at all in the second half of this year. Two young children, a dog, and a tendency to be more office-bound with my job all seem to have conspired against much birding. I hadn't realised how much of my birding was done on the fly in the odd spare hour as I...
