New official Checklist of the birds of Germany sparks debate

I agree. One assumption I have is that the committee was 'jealous' of the stringent rules that apply to German botanical nomenclature. There, many vernacular names have been adjusted to fit into a taxonomic system that reflects, similar to the Linnean binomial nomenclature, its taxon (mostly...

New official Checklist of the birds of Germany sparks debate

The renaming took place to avoid names consisting of two separate words: 'Großer Knutt'/Great Knot -> Anadyrknutt; Kleine Bergente/Lesser Scaup -> Kanadabergente (I would have preferred 'Veilchenbergente').

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2018 edition)

I saw Common Crossbills in Vienna, so this issue can be solved :)

    Honey Buzzard ... or Honey-buzzard?

But if 'buzzard' will be a taxonomic term with an exclusive use, shouldn't we then accordingly have Egypt-vultures, as they are no true vultures? And the New World vultures will be like Turkey-vultures? It's getting nasty... Don't think such a strict nomenclature should be applied.

    Honey Buzzard ... or Honey-buzzard?

Ok, this is leading the thread away from the topic, but the name 'Lammergeier' is derived from German, whereas the German name is Bartgeier = Bearded Vulture. Don't like the name Lammergeier anyway, same is true for Killer Whale instead of Orca. Lammergeier (lamb vulture) creates the impression...

    Honey Buzzard ... or Honey-buzzard?

IIRC Honey-buzzards (Pernis) are actually closer related to Egyptian and Bearded Vulture than to Buteo buzzards. If that's the case, than the IOC's definition of a buzzard is in fact very wide... Hyphen makes absolutely sense here in my opinion.

    Giant Kingbird, Cuba?

Here I provide a comparison between the Kingbird in question and a definite Loggerhead with similar angle of view - does this make things more clear? I hope so ;) Best, Lorin

    Giant Kingbird, Cuba?

Thank you Niels and Warixenjalka! I saw this bird at the beginning of my trip. Wanted to go to Belen also, but it didn't work out - my main targets there would have been Palm Crow and Giant Kingbird. However, I just realized at the end of my vacation that I might actually have seen the...

    Giant Kingbird, Cuba?

No worries, Niels, I see your point - one has to be careful. I used the photo galleries of ebird, hbw and observado, which I consider generally trustworthy or, in the latter, where correct species determination is even indicated. Maybe my bird will although get in this category ;) Best, Lorin

    Giant Kingbird, Cuba?

Don't get me wrong, Niels, but I am able to search for images of this species on the internet. As I have done so, I didn't find any that contradict my initial thought, but as I know the tail tips are a diagnostic feature, which are concealed here, and as I am lacking experience with these...

    Giant Kingbird, Cuba?

Hi everyone, just having seen Loggerhead Kingbirds the previous day for the first time in my life, I took a single photo of this guy and only later realized the bill is quite strong. Although the tip of the tail is not visible, now I suspect I actually found a Giant Kingbird? Location is...

    adult Northern Pintail?

Here I found a juv. male on tarsiger.com, with similar feathers - but the bill is dark from base to tip... http://tarsiger.com/images/pirpa/Acuta2.jpg http://tarsiger.com/images/pirpa/Acuta3.jpg I am still confused... |<|

    adult Northern Pintail?

Hi there, comments on this pintail would be highly appreciated. It is a male for sure, but I wonder whether the feathers I marked are indicating the remnants of a juvenile plumage or are these just eclipse feathers? right side left side Picture was taken in early Oct. Best, Carnifex
