Porros or Roof Prisms -- survey

I'll keep my "turd" then, and you enjoy that little toothpick binocular of yours. I rather like holding the binocular with my hands, not just my thumbs like roofs.

Porros or Roof Prisms -- survey

2 leaning towards 1 Remeber, not all roof binoculars are bullet proof and water proof. I had a Bushnell 10x32 folding model that was certainly not waterproof and the prism came loose after a short drop. And many military binoculars like the Steiners are porros built like a tank.

Leica 8x32 BN - Still OK?

I read here that Leica has now started putting a little lubricant on their binoculars, does this apply to the BN series as well?

Tero, I am really not wishing to find an equally wide binocular and I am quite leaning towards a compact roof prism binocular for reasons I have said above. I want to know if it would be hard for me to adjust if I got them considering I have only really used about the widest you'll even find.

I have the box still and it says EII, The box looks ancient but I guess their boxes still look like this, to be honest I have not spent much time with the binoculars in the last few weeks and I assumed it said the model on them some where in all that logo. I really want something smaller, so...

Well there are a few things that bug me about these binoculars. When I used them recently in temperatures hovering in the teens they fogged as I got in and out of the van and the focus was hard to turn. I also notice problems both when using me glasses or contacts. I lose some of the view...

They are marked EII, they were a hand me down from my grandfather. In doing some research I don't think they are as old as I thought but they look like the binoculars he used his whole life, but maybe I never noticed when he changed them.

I may be spoiled but the only binocular I have used much is an older Nikon 8x30 with an 8.8 degree width. I have been tossing around the idea of an upgrade. I bird casually at best so I am thinking that a pair of really good compacts will do for my use but they have fields that are more like...

    10x25 Ultravid

Very intersting. I have found that improvement in my ability to identify birds comes more from sharpness (resolution I guess you call it) than from absolute brightness.

    Nitrogen versus Argon

You are joking, correct? The densities of the gasses, even under pressure, is low enough that one would not notice.

    10x25 Ultravid

Have any compact roofs equalled or bested the Bausch and Lomb 7x26 yet? A few years back when I was looking for a new pair of something to play with they were talked up and down as being the epitome of compact binoculars. Are the Ultravids the new epitome?

    Design Selection Compacts?

When were they made and were/are they any good?

    Read any good books lately?

Reminds me of a joke. A man wanted to get rid of a working but old refridgerator. He put in on the curb with a sing saying "free, works great" and it stayed there for a week. He changed the sign to say only "for sale, $50" and someone stole it that night.

    Read any good books lately?

Not a whole book on the subject, but Pete Dunne's book On Birdwatching has a good section on optics including how he came to use what he does today.

    Mid Middles

I quite like my 8x30 porro but feel it will eventually disintegrate. I'd like to buy an 8x32 roof one day but have heard things about a lot of false color in this price range. Is there a big difference between the upper-middle models like the Kahles and Pentax and the lower-mid models like...
