    Your most anticipated futures books

Thanks for those kind words about 'Orchid Summer', John. 'The Glitter in the Green' is due to be published in the US & Canada by Basic Books (and yes, they're part of Hachette) on 20th April 2021 - and it's being published by Bloomsbury in the UK on 24th June 2021. Cheers, J

    2017 UK orchids

The site was absolutely trashed by cattle when I visited last year - all the cages flattened, and the plants grazed off. I know it's common ground, but really the management of the place is going to be the orchids' downfall if that sort of wanton grazing is allowed to happen... ce

    Kestrel, Shetland 01/05/2017 (05/01/2017 US)

Wowzers. Funny thing - I stopped to check out an exhausted female Kestrel at the roadside here in Shetland last weekend, and was saying as I got out of the car "why can't this be a Lesser?"... And, of course, it wasn't! ce

    Britain's Mammals

Just thought I'd mention that any copies ordered via Rare Bird Alert (until 30th April) will generate a 60p donation to Birdlife International. http://www.rarebirdalert.co.uk/v2/Content/BOTW-Britains-Mammals.aspx?s_id=432228152 very best, Jon @dunnjons

    Britain's Mammals

Thank you very much! Yours is, I think, our first review...|=)| I'm really glad you liked it - and hope you find it useful for years to come. Jon @dunnjons

    2017 UK orchids

Mm, I can't wait to get cracking again this year. So many things to see and so little time! A small RFI at this early juncture before we're all busy looking for British and Irish orchids - I'm going to be spending quite a lot of time in the Aude department of France this spring and summer, and...

    Canon 100mm 2.8isL.

I've absolutely no idea why I suddenly can't upload photos on BF, but suspect it's my ancient laptop's operating system... anyway, that moan aside, I've lately started using the Kenko 1.4 DGX with a Canon 100mm LIS macro on a 7D body for helleborines. Still finding my feet with it as a...

    2016 UK Orchids

I've got a morning to kill next week in Glasgow, and was wondering about where to go for an Epipactis fix... Any suggestions (and details) welcome via PM please. Re Bardykes Bing - is the site extant? I'm sure I heard somewhere that it was being / had been 'developed'. Maybe that's my...

    2016 UK Orchids

You did indeed! As per my post earlier this morning... I'd have added the photo here too but either Birdforum or my local IT imps aren't allowing me to. Unless some disaster (like a lawnmower or strimmer, as they were right at the edge of a mowed area) has befallen those three flowering plants...

    2016 UK Orchids

Re helleborines, a northern England update... The first 'youngiana' were coming into flower last Saturday in the north-east, though most still in bud. 'tynensis' further ahead, but still many in bud too. Lindisfarne Helleborines were looking good, but already getting a little frazzled in the...

    2016 UK Orchids

Bit of an RFI please. I went to the well-known Cumbrian common-land site for Small White Orchid on Saturday evening to find that a local farmer had put cattle on there - evidenced by a large amount of cowpats, flattened areas of grass where they'd been resting and, unfortunately, a lot of...

    2016 UK Orchids

A good day, yesterday - Lesser Twayblade (4 flowering plants, a few more blind ones nearby) and a Greenish Warbler both within a couple of minutes of home. The former surely *massively* overlooked. The latter annoyingly within a stone's throw of my garden, but still not gracing the garden...
