ID small long-necked bird on Ohio River.

Hi Kyle: Since this is your first post, welcome to the BF. Your county has to be Scioto, my wifes hometown was Portsmourh, and we were married there June 1, 1946. Had 58 wonderful years together before she was taken in 2004. ditto---green heron. Craig If you aren't in over your head how do...

    Swallows!!!!! :(

Andy: Laws are somewhat different here. Our Migratory Bird Act passed to implement the treaty of 1916 between Great Britain (on behalf of Canada) and the United States makes it illegal to possess or harm as much as a feather or an egg, but does not address itself to nests. Treaty was...

    ID confirmation/Aptos, CA Please....

I had one hanging out at my suet feeder all winter. This is not a statistical analysis, but I'd guess about 10% of the time the crown would be visible, usually when the little guy was wet. Craig

    Woodpeckers And Suet Type ?

Hi Roberto: Fishing lure mfgrs don't make lures to catch fish, they make them to catch fishermen. The corollary is that suet mfgrs don't make suet to please birds, but to please people who feed birds. I've made my own by rendering fat in the microwave, adding corn meal, oat meal, peanut butter...

    Question re: post fledging vocalization.

Is it normal for juveniles to vocalize to beg from the adults after they have left nest? For the last few days I've had red shouldered hawks (at least three) screaming their heads off all day long. I'm in a mountain valley at 2300 ft in northern California. The mixed conifer/deciduous forest...

    Abandoned Baby House Sparrows

Wabby Twax: Sure don't want to rain on your parade, but you should be aware that, in the US, the having in possession of even a feather of a native bird without a research or rehab permit, is illegal and punishable by up to a $500 dollar fine and 6 months in jail. I agree with you, this seems...

hello, i have a roadrunner question!!

Hi Tasneem and Dave The copyrighted "Birders Handbook" by Ehrlich, Dobbins, and Weheye has a very extensive discussion of the early treaties re: migratory bird protection between The United States Great Britain (on behalf of Canada) and later with Japan, Russia, and Mexico, and also the...

    Rufous 07

Hi Chris: I'm north of you in Weaverville. One barreled through on March 15 and a second on the 17th without even stopping at the feeders. Do you also get them in the fall migration? I haven't observed them in the fall. Read somewhere that they tend to go south east of the Sierras Craig :hi:
