Hi, Sal, I had almost given up hope! Are we having a bit of a renaissance? That would be splendid. And thanks for flying the flag, as you clearly have been doing. I have been taking a bit of a birding back seat for a while, being busy with Cape Town's ADU recording butterflies, dragonflies and...

    Ardnamurchan Fungi - second batch

Nick, once again, thank you. Re Milk caps, these we see here in South Africa. One of the common ones is L. deliciosus - the Pine Ring, or Orange Milk Cap. It's common in pine woods in the Southern Cape, and makes excellent eating. H.fasciculare also occurs here, but I have yet to see an...

    Ardnamurchan Fungi - ID's, please

Nick, many thanks for this. I know it sounds daft, but I can never bring myself to destroy or damage a fungus in order to photograph the gills. So I have a lot of nice pics and not too many ID's! I'll be posting some more Ardnamurchan fungi shortly. Best wishes, Dave.

    South African Lark and Cisticola

Thanks, Larry - the birds were photographed in Phinda Resource Reserve, south of Mkhuze Game reserve and west of Lake St Lucia, in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Habitat was savannah grassland, relatively lush and non-arid. Essentially the low-altitude coastal strip between the coastal dunes and the N-S...

    A South African Fungus

Nick, thank you. I agree with your Marasmius thoughts, but my South African literature features nothing quite like this one. I can find nothing with such a strongly plicated cap. That is why I posted the pictures on Birdforum in the hope that someone with more knowledge than me might recognise...

    Kruger trip February 2014

Nice trip, Padraig, glad you enjoyed it. Just got back from Kruger myself, and I was astonished at the frequency of European Rollers, far more than I have seen in the past. I had to work hard to find a lilac-breasted roller, which is usually common. No idea if there is a reason for this, but...

    A South African Fungus

This was photographed recently on the northern Kwa-Zulu Natal coast at Cape Vidal. Any comments on identity would be appreciated. Thank you. Dave
