Not sure if the ferries will be on the summer timetable when you are in Oban. In summer on Thursdays the 07.30 ferry to Col and Tiree runs over to Barra. You can get to stay on Col for eight hours and over six on Tiree. To get around either you can walk or bikes and cars are for hire on both...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I agree it is almost certainly a canadaxgreylag hybrid. There are now a number of similar looking birds showing up in the burgeoning feral Greylag and Canada Goose population in Lochaber and North Argyll. Sometimes they get mistaken for Blue Snow Geese which are also feral on the Isle of Col.

    7D2 vs 1D4

I think that atmospheric diffraction, 'thick air' is at play here, so you are never going to get a sharp picture however much you process the image. On the very few days that we have seen the sun in the north this month there has always been a cold east wind blowing over the sun warmed earth or...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

Interesting, It certainly was not the case when I was trying to source grips for my 7D & 5D3 a few years back. The wireless release included is a bonus.

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

As far as I am aware non-Canon grips are simply a box with two batteries connected. You don't get the same vertical control switches and toggle. Fairly pointless you might as well just carry a spare battery in your pocket unless you are looking for much better camera balance with a big lens...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I can see where you are coming from as I swithered for a long time before deciding to hang on to mine, largely on the grounds of frames per sec and reach. Wildlife in the west of Scotland is for the most part thin on the ground and un-confiding and you have got to take any opportunity that you...

I always understood that unlike black grouse, which are on the lek for months, Caper only lek for a few days around the third week in April. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I don't think that mirror vibration is a problem anymore. The new mirror damping system on the MK2 is very efficient, way quieter than my 5D3. A great prospect for the next generation of Canon bodies. I think that I have pointed out several times in the past that it is the 7D2's extremely small...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

As far as batteries go you pay’s your money and takes your choice. Just make sure that you invest in ones that are chipped to work with the 7D2, even having done that there is always a danger that Canon will issue a non-reversible firmware upgrade that will stop third party batteries working...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I would agree the 7D2 is most definitely a fine day camera. I am finding that in poor light when there are not too many photons flying around the lack of dynamic range is a big let-down. In all other respects it’s a great camera. Technique has to be spot on with very long lenses to prevent...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I thought that I would just carry out a wee experiment with my 7D2. I don’t possess a 400 mm f5.6, so I stuck a 1.4 converter on to my 300 mm f4 with the IS off and the camera set to AV. Hand holding a few frames of birds perched in the garden in the snow produced soft mushy de-focused images...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

I think that you should have asked them if they had tried using a tripod. I am sure that the vast majority of the focus problems can be put down to poor technique on the part of the photographer. If you take liberties hand holding with long lens on an extremely high density pixel camera like the...

    New tripod

I think that Gitzo Systematics are about as rock solid and versatile as you are going to get, particularly when it comes to swapping over heads. Expensive but you get what you pay for. The newer models have a much better leg locking system than the ten year old G1548 that I possess. It can be a...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

Looks like both subjects are suffering from a severe case of heat haze distortion to me rather than any problem with the focus on the camera. Hand held?
