    Essex Birding

For anyone interested, the pics mentioned are here : https://twitter.com/RICHIEGANNON/status/552899201466912768?s=09 I'm only looking on these on a mobile screen in a packed tube carriage (so not the greatest for careful study)... but my initial reaction is that these are Linnet.

    Unstreaked Acro in London.....

On my one and only visit to see this bird, I also heard it giving a standard Reed Warbler call at close range - no doubt about which bird was calling.

Wellies for walking. Help please. UK

Another vote for Muck Boots - these are both comfortable and warm. You get what you pay for.... See http://birdingfrontiers.com/2014/01/13/birding-essentials-the-muckboot/

    Essex Birding

Kids who've seen lots of birds are certainly driven around by the their parents, for sure. And being out and about, learning the craft of birding (whether on a local patch, or in other bird-rich bits of the country) is certainly the way to become a better birder. But with respect, I guess you...

    Essex Birding

That's nothing... Try looking up Mya-Rose Craig, aged 11 - think her British list has just topped 400, and world list 3000!

    Essex Birding

The place I've always looked is on the NW side of Braxted Park - approx where the '1' marker is >here< (Hopefully the link will work - grid ref is TL 852 164 if it doesn't!) There is very limited parking around the junction here, so be careful not to block access. From the marked point, walk...

    High Atlas; Imlil or Oukaimden

Petrol should be fine in Ourzazate - and given that this is only 200km from Marrakech, can't see any reason why you'd have problems. Also, regarding accommodation at Oukaimeden - the Club Alpin Francais has basic dormitory rooms, but comfortable enough. It's MUCH cheaper than the hotels at 250...

    Why not female Pochard?

    Double Crested Cormorant?

That's a regular Cormorant - specifically looks like the European sinensis race (which is common in the south-east), based on the shape of the bare skin below the bill. What made you think it was possibly a Double-crested? They are way rarer than 'unusual' - there has only ever been one in the...

I'd do the seafront - the point will be really exposed in this weather. At least on the front you can get a bit of shelter. Ages since I've been down there, though - most of my seawatching is in Norfolk.

    Raptor, Campo Grande, Brazil

Yep, I'd go for that as a decent starting point. Was in the Pantanal a month or two ago, with loads of raptors to sort out... but the contrast between vertical barring on the upper breast and horizontal on the lower (on a fairly small, compact hawk) was always a good pointer to Roadside Hawk.

    purple emperors

See http://braddersbirding.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/introducing-his-imperial-majesty.html?m=0 for some pics from Fermyn & Lady Woods on Sunday - saw at least a dozen, very easily.

    Approaching Hides on RSPB Reserves

Yes, the hides' approaches are usually screened, one way or another. Same is generally true for hides on other, non-RSPB reserves, though I'm sure we can all think of exceptions. Why?
