Hi Lou, thanks very much for your help, Joe

    gulls

Small Herring Gull? Regent's Park, London Hello all, This gull has caused me a lot of confusion. I'm assuming it's just a small and dainty 2w Herring Gull. When I first saw this bird I reported it as a 'first-winter Ring-billed Gull (or hybrid)', but was advised that it is a Herring Gull based...

    Hello from El Salvador

Hi Robert, Welcome to Birdforum from me as well. Suchitoto is one of my very favourite places in the world; I will return soon! DL

    Odd sounding song thrush

Hi Kev, Have you seen the bird? If not, there are other less likely but interesting possibilities. To my ears the song of Icterine Warbler sounds like a speeded up, scratchy Song Thrush. Icterine Warbler is of course quite rare in this country, although singing birds do turn up occasionally. I...

    Dahab Sewage works

From what I see on Google Earth I would ask the taxi driver to take you to Dahab Dive Paradise/La Reina Hotel, then walk across the road towards the obvious raised mounds - which is where the sewage works/ponds are located. Best of luck. Enjoy! DL

    Dahab Sewage works

Yes, the sewage ponds there can be good for birding - lots of migrants. Look out for Sooty Falcons overhead. Looks like the sewage ponds are c.5 miles (as the falcon flies) north-east of where you're staying. Have a look on Google Earth: 28°29'37.21"N, 34°30'33.91"E. The bay/lagoon to the south...

    All-dark Falcon, Cornwall, UK

Yep! It does look good for Eleonora's Falcon. Nice work! I'd contact the bird news services as soon as possible so that people can go and check whether it's still in the area.

    *Earthflight* on Thurs 20.00pm-21.00pm on 29th Dec 2011 BBC1

I completely agree. The thing is, so far I had been tolerating the factual inaccuracies, borderline anthropomorphism, bad editing and sight-seeing tours, because (and hopefully most of us agree on this) the majority of the photography, whether of wild or captively-reared birds, varies from...

    Beware the 'Nano Hummingbird'

The development of military drones in North America has resulted in the 'Nano Hummingbird', which is designed to mimic Broad-billed Hummingbird, as reported on the Today programme this week. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12513315 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16354430 So...

The Big Year Coming soon to Cinemas

Yes, many people in the UK will have their last chances of seeing this film at the cinema tonight and tomorrow. DL

The Big Year Coming soon to Cinemas

I went to see the film last week and I'm another one who enjoyed it. Admittedly, I went along with low expectations. Those who have been put off by the trailer should note that it doesn't represent the film well at all. The trailer suggests that the film is only loosely based on the book, but I...

    Norfolk birding

Thanks for the discussion regarding skuas seen on the deck at Cley today. I saw one skua in the Eye Field around mid-morning that was called as a Pom. However, I was convinced it was an Arctic Skua, and expressed this to a few of the birders present, but until I said something no-one else seemed...

    Good birds seen from restaurants

I love this thread. So here are couple of mine: Whilst having a couple of cheeky Fantas in a restaurant in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, in an effort to counter the dehydration, I saw a Jabiru flying nearby and promptly moved to get better views. Also, a nice accompaniment to my delicious locally...

Black and white birds in Venezuela

Well, I have to say I'm not an expert on Venezuelan avifauna, and Tropical Mockingbird seems infinitely more likely, but having looked at a few images on the interweb of the candidate species, I'm convinced that they're Masked Water-Tyrants. Regarding the size, remember that they are a few...
