How to become a gull ringer in Sweden

While I'm certainly not an expert on the matter, and know nothing about ringing gulls, the system in Sweden is generally just that you learn to ring from an experienced ringer, and then you can get a "helper's license" which allows you to ring on your own (within the project that the license is...

Which birds don't you see now, since you started birdwatching?

When I was a kid I remember all the Rooks that used to strut about on the lawns back home. Now they're almost gone from here, mostly because people think they are too loud so they tore down the nests. (It's a bit better now, we've got the local politicians to realise the plight of the Rooks and...

    Sparrow, Florida

Hi! I saw this sparrow by the beach on Sanibel Island, Florida on January 1 this year. I put it down as a Grasshopper Sparrow, since I couldn't find anything else in the Sibley guide that matched, but since this was my very first time birding in the US I don't feel entirely confident in my ID...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

American Black Duck at Frövisjön, Västmanland, Sweden on May 28. Nice bird although the Baikal Teal I saw at the same place last year was certainly more striking (but sadly considered an escape and so no tick).

What's the rarest bird you've had in your garden?

I don't have a garden, but put up a feeder outside my window every winter. Last year I had a Long-tailed Tit come visiting the feeder! Not really a rare bird in Sweden, but usually only seen in the forests, so it was very unexpected. Made even better by the fact that it's my favourite bird... :)

What is the difference between a fledgling and a juvenile?

If I remember correctly, juvenile refers to a plumage and not really an "age". It is the first "real" plumage a bird has after leaving the nest. Most small passerines will quickly start moulting this plumage and thus aren't really juveniles for very long. After the moult they can be referred to...

    Sweden in July 2014

A car is indeed the best way to get around, even if many places can be reached by public transport. End of June is a nice time in Sweden. Birds are still singing and the first waders return from the north and stop by the shallow Swedish lakes. If you visit any of the more popular birding lakes...

    Your favorite bird family?

I love waders of all kinds, especially the smaller species. Beautiful, sometimes a challenge to identify which makes it fun, and often very confiding creatures. They have it all!

    2 Bar Crossbill?

If I saw this bird in Sweden I would never think of Common Crossbill, never seen one with that much white. The white on the tertials can easily wear off, here are some birds from Sweden with just a little white: http://svalan.artdata.slu.se/birds/gallery_imageinfo.asp?imageID=527130...
