Canon 100-400 and Kenko 1,4 - nice !!!
I am never sure how helpful web-sized post-processed pics are in evaluating image quality, but here's a shot taken with an ancient Canon D60 with 300 f/4 + 1.4x + 2x (stacked converters) tracking a moving Egret via manual focus. personally, I can't see a difference between the web-size image... -

Which 300mm lens? / Camera settings
I would pick the 300 f/4 IS. I find this a very nice lens to handhold and it has superb image quality with or without a 1.4x TC. In good light, you can good images with a 1.4x and 2x TC stacked. Then there's its 1.5m minimum focusing distance which means that with a short extension tube, it's... -

Sensor cleaning-- a different question

I was not particularly impressed by the 100-400 samples I've seen at max zoom and wide open. Maybe they were well-used lenses with minute optical errors and accumulated dust/dirt caused by years of pushing and pulling the zoom. definitely the 300 f/4 if bird photography is your primary area. It's optically superior to the 100-400 even with 1.4x TC attached, faster in AF, better resistance to dust and sand. -

Farne islands
After a whole lot of bad weather and 1 previous washed-out visit, I finally spent 1/2 a day on Farne last Sunday.
