Barometric Pressure and captive/rehab raptor behavior

Thanks for the reply. I've been adding moon phases to the bird's behavior (good and bad). For Ivan windy days do tend to show a bit more activity. This is also when we see a drop in pressure as fronts arrive from the west and northwest. The moon phase is another variable which will compile at...

Birding Venice and Tuscany in June

My wife and I will be traveling to Italy to witness the transit of Venus across the face of the sun on June 8th. We've set a rough itinerary of Rome, rail to Venice with a Milan departure. One possible approach was to rent a car in Milan and spend time in Tuscany. I would appreciate any...

Now, that is a "Pretty Bird!" Great shot.

Osprey 1, Imm. Bald Eagle 0 - experience vs. youth

The experience factor may also be related to where the bird was in the pecking order while in the nest. Those down at the bottom of the order tend to shy away from situations quicker than those at the top. Red-shouldered hawks around here act more like coyotes and let you get in closer than the...

    Very Light Morph Red-tailed Hawk

Very nice shots Paul. It's always nice to see the variations nature produces to keep us homo sapiens on our toes.

Osprey 1, Imm. Bald Eagle 0 - experience vs. youth

Merci Paul et Paul 42, The raptor cycle varies at Cachuma Lake each winter. There is at least one resident Bald Eagle pair and perhaps Golden in the area. The majority of the eagles show up around the end of November and may stay through March. Along with Osprey and other raptors the viewing is...

Osprey 1, Imm. Bald Eagle 0 - experience vs. youth

Brian, the eagle was fine; minus a few feathers. It never looked back. The Osprey went back to its tree at the top of the hillside overlooking the lake. Next to watching a Great Blue Heron nail a gopher and fly away with it in its crop this one event is also on the list.

Osprey 1, Imm. Bald Eagle 0 - experience vs. youth

Since this forum is about raptors I'd like to share this sequence of events I witnessed last year at Cachuma Lake in Santa Barbara County, California. Bald and Golden Eagles winter here, along with Osprey and the usual host of hawks and falcons. While crusing the lake I noticed an immature...

Golden Eagles could re-establish population in Ireland

Golden vs. Bald Eagles in the California I find the Golden Eagle restoration in Ireland wonderful news. However, on the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara Goldens are being captured and relocated off the islands. They are killing all the Island Foxes (a bit larger than a cat) to...

    Juvenile Ferruginous

Sorry for using the vernacular. Ferruginous Hawks Buteo regalis are the largest of the hawks (Buteos) in North America. They range from the Canadian prairies through the rockies and parts of the Pacific coast. They get their name from the rufous or red wrist patches and leg feathers...

Barometric Pressure and captive/rehab raptor behavior

Thanks Nigel. The blindness was one aspect I've overlooked completely. That could explain why the Kestrel (also blind in one eye), seems much more hyper at times. This gives me something else to add to the equation. cheers, t
