    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

I heard of a Crested Caracara being seen on a golf course in Orange County, NY. Decided to go out and see it today, and wasn't disappointed. Since 8:52am, was on the same tree up until 2pm when it returned to the golf course. Gonna try and go back later this evening, only a 30minute drive to get...

    Garden / Yard List 2015

Had 4 species of woodpeckers on the property a while ago. Captured Red-Bellied, Downy, and Hairy woodpeckers in a single photo (may upload later), and my housemate spotted a Pileated woodpecker near the neighbor's shed at the same time. Hairy and Pileated new yard birds for the season.

    Garden / Yard List 2015

Just spotted an unusual American Tree Sparrow on the feeders which i assumed to be a first-of-season Chipping Sparrow. It was indeed a Chipping Sparrow, not yet in breeding colors. Day is extremely windy, but sunny, hopefully allowing for easier spotting of movement as the sun reflects off bodies.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

My goldfinch was quite skittish as well, but that could be because it was recently captured and escaped, or part of a small group of wild birds descended from those released in the mid to late 1800s in the NYC/NNJ/LI area.

That's what I'm thinking too, but still a beauty to see and photograph. I'm "ticking" it anyway, even though that's against "ticking" rules, lol. https://instagram.com/p/1BRVXHH2hA

    Garden / Yard List 2015

Thanks. I do see some familiar "faces" are still active. Came back just to post about a European Goldfinch seen at my New York feeders this morning. My housemate was describing the bird, saying it had red around the beak (which i told her were called lores, which obviously is incorrect), and i...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Latest lifer for me, a European Goldfinch spotted at my feeders in southern New York State, United States. Yes, i'm well aware from my Sibley Field Guide and internet research that these are sometimes kept as pets in the exotic bird trade as well as having been unsuccessfully introduced in some...

    Garden / Yard List 2015

Hi all, first time here since 2008 i guess, lol. Dunno if anyone from back then is still around, but i'm from southern New York, USA. So far my yard list is pretty small: 01. Mourning dove 02. Red-bellied woodpecker 03. Downy Woodpecker 04. American crow 05. Black-capped tit (oops, i mean...

How is your 2008 List Going?

My latest year bird/lifer is a lone Ovenbird that foraged on our lawn in the Adirondack Park. However, I noticed a beak "deformity" as seen below. If truly a deformity, it could explain why the bird seemed not to care that we were so close to it. At one point, I came to within 2 feet of the...

A rank beginner in New York, New York

The gigantic raptor seen earlier in the month has not been seen since, even with the local bird experts looking out for it when they pass by the area. Whilst we were at our cabin in the Adirondacks, i saw a lone male Black-Throated Green Warbler, a lone male Scarlet Tanager, and a pair of Cedar...

How is your 2008 List Going?

Had a good weekend in the Adirondacks for a change. Was greeted with a Black-Throated Green Warbler then a flash of red and black as a Scarlet Tanager flew by. Walked the dogs, and after returning, spotted what appeared to be a pair of Eastern Phoebes, only they dove to the ground, indicating to...

    Add to woodpecker list

Damn... I made this post back in 2004... But i do have good news, and it doesn't involve Geico saving me hundreds on my car insurance. Early last month (May 2008) we had our second Baltimore Oriole sighting in our yard. He even brung a male friend! Even better, we got extremely lucky when a...

A rank beginner in New York, New York

Hi, Pinewood! My local patch in Dutchess County, NY recently had a Red-Headed Woodpecker, in fact the woodpecker came to our feeders, what a surprise! Also, yesterday, my mother caught a glimpse of a rather gigantic raptor just a mile from our house. When I did a photo line-up using pics...

How is your 2008 List Going?

There was a sighting of a gigantic raptor sometime in the last week, off the nearby Interstate 84 in NY, between exits 16 and 17 (Taconic Parkway and Ludingtonville Road, respectively). The second sighting was yesterday afternoon, on Route 52 in Stormville, right near the previous sighting...
