Know what you mean..I once found a decent looking area using google maps near Buckingham. It turned out to have industrial quantities of Corn Buntings which was cool, but my first visit I locked myself out of the car, and the 2nd visit I got home to find my daughter getting rushed to hospital...

    Desert Wheatear, UK ?

Well done Ken.. Just been on the BUBO listing site, and the Britain self found list (Proper birding.. none of this twitching nonsense ;) ). Only 2 people out of 30+ have found a Desert Wheatear. One of those was many years ago. Certainly rarer than anything I have ever found in the UK, in 20...

Best (UK) home base for birding?

Hello John, I'm next door in North Baddesley! I mentioned that as the downside.. it underperforms for rarities, and doesn't have a "Bill" nearby. Hengistbury is just within 20 miles, as the crow flies, providing I park short and walk the last couple of miles! The Purbecks have some great...

Best (UK) home base for birding?

I once read that Wareham (Dorset) was the place in the UK with the most diversity in terms of wildlife within a few miles of the town. So that must be a contender, especially if your interest goes beyond just birds. I'm now living just north of Southampton, and I really enjoy it here. The New...

    Seasonal songs

That book is very enlightening.. I've heard "plastic" song from Wren, Rook, and Chiff-Chaff. I wouldn't have picked up on any of them previously!

    Massive Redwing arrival

Even heard/saw a couple of groups low over Hounslow first thing this morning, so they must be just about everywhere!

This kind of thing always amazes me! We went through a run of about 4 consecutive years always getting our first Brimstone Butterfly of the year on the 25th March, give or take a day. And earlier this month, I was lucky enough to find a Pectoral Sandpiper up in Orkney.. when I searched Google...

There you go.. North of Romsey ;) Only decent sightings for me were a Whinchat on the edge of North Baddesley over the weekend (Hoe Lane/Sylvan Drive "Dog Walkers's Field"), and still plenty of Buzzards at the West End of Hoe Lane (14 on Sunday Lunchtime). Peter

Head north of Romsey, and Barn Owls are fairly abundant, especially in the winter months. In fact it is possible to see all five regular Owl species in North West Hampshire / Wiltshire borders, if you are prepared to sacrifice an entire winter of evenings, and have plenty of luck! I've migrated...
