Help with 3 hummers, Arizona USA

First three photos are definitely a Broad-billed. Last is definitely an Anna's - Ruby-throated would not have red on top of head. Fourth is probably Anna's.

    Expert help needed for Hummingbirds

I would have to agree with these.

    Two Hummingbirds, California.

I did not say it was not an Anna's, I was questioning the reasons given.

    Two Hummingbirds, California.

Interesting. Everyone is jumping on Anna's for the second bird, one even saying it is because of the white spot behind the eye, yet Sibley shows Anna's as having an eyebrow, and every Anna's I have seen has an eyebrow. Incidently, most of the hummingbird species shown in Sibleys have a white...

Broad-tailed hummingbird - suburban Chicago USA

Sorry to offend you James, but many of the "out of place" hummingbirds that are banded and become state records come from "inexperienced birders" who just happen to mention something to the right person.

    Commercial Nectar VS Table Sugar

I've got 2 better reasons for tossing the stuff: 1) I have seen thousands of hummingbirds swarming hundreds of feeders (literal numbers folks) every year in Rockport Texas and not one of them had a drop of red food color in them - it is not needed so why use it on the birds?? 2) There is strong...

Broad-tailed hummingbird - suburban Chicago USA

There are several things that indicate this is not a Broad-tailed and the location of the bird is not one of them. Yes, this would be a new state record, but how long ago would a Green-breasted Mango have been unheard of in Wisconsin, or a Green Violet-ear in North Carolina? We have to keep an...

    hummingbird observed in oz

I apologize if I sound a little brisque, but an image picked from the gallery is meaningless. When someone can provide us with an image of a hummingbird they photographed in Australia (and there had better be some pretty convincing evidence it is taken down under, you may change a few opinions...

Should hummingbird feeders be distanced from hopper feeders?

Neither of these is necessary or absolute. I have seen fantastic hummingbird activity at stations where the feeders are literally right on top of each other - 13 species in a single garden and birds so thick you had to shout to be heard! Similarly, I run 17 hummingbird feeders, 23 seed feeders...

    Help with baby robin

Hi Tara: I tend to agree with Stonechat, that the best thing you could have done was move the robin to a safe place near by and talk with the kids about the importance of protecting our wildlife and native environment. I certainly understand your concern though and am glad you have acted. Now...

Also a breeding population in West Texas of the same species. Looks like a good call to me too Steve.

    Hummingbird ID, Arizona, USA

Exactly Chris. Blue-throated would have shown two facial white stripes - not an insignificant white spot behind the eye. I did not have time to study the photo closely before my earlier reply - was just surprised by the reasoning when I usually point out the large tail on the BLUH. I am sure...

    Hummingbird ID, Arizona, USA

Quoting Sheri Williamson on page 169 in Peterson Field Guides Hummingbirds of North America under Blue-throated Hummingbird "A very large, long tailed (emphasis mine) hummingbird...". The same source says of Costa's Hummingbird on page 204 "very short tail" (emphasis again mine). I am not sure...

    hummingbird observed in oz

Carlos: While I agree with you, you would be amazed how many times I am told by people that they have "one pair of hummingbirds" or "two pair of hummingbirds - one at each end of the house". Despite what we know, they "always see them in pairs". I appologize for not recognizing what was...
