    Dark Kumlien's Gull?

I think Viking Gull - as a rule (or as much as gulls respect rules) - has a Glaucous-type bill ie pale with a black tip. My friend at the North Thames Gull Group has suggested Iceland x Herring.

    Dark Kumlien's Gull?

Hi there, Is this a dark Kumlien's Gull or something else? Generally the plumage seemed to fit KG but the bird was big, chunky and had a rather heavy bill - not the normal impression you get with Kumlien's or Iceland Gull. This was in Guernsey, Channel Islands today. Thanks

    Birding World DVD

What is the current thinking on purchasing the complete set of Birding World journals on DVD? I have an incomplete set of Birding World taking up space in my house. Would I be better to bin them and buy the DVD for £80? Or do the hard copies still have a value? Thanks.

    Crossbill species

Thanks all. We don't get Common Crossbills very often at home in Guernsey so from the outset, I am disadvantaged. I am reasonably confident that (at least some of) these birds are intermediate and therefore can be assumed to be Scottish. I accept that this is as good as it's likely to get!

    Crossbill species

These Crossbills fed in Larch, Spruce and Pine (not helpful!) in the Abernethy Forest. I'm hoping the beaks are robust enough to be Scottish Crossbills.

Biased you may be, Steve, but no-one has disagreed! Cheers.

    Best Greek island for birds?

I enjoyed a fantastic trip to Lesvos about a decade ago. Should I even consider birding a different Greek island or is Lesvos the clear winner? :flyaway:

    Wheatear in Lesbos

Hi Steve, Thanks for your help. It is great to have a thorough answer from the guy who literally wrote the book!

    Wheatear in Lesbos

Yeah, that's as far as I got! But I think Pied can be ruled out because I don't think it's got a suitably black back. It leans towards EBEW, which is frustrating because this bird stood out from other birds we had seen all week.

I think you're right with Chiffchaff.

    Wheatear in Lesbos

Valery, here is another (even poorer) photo. The upperparts seemed to have a greyish cast, rather than the sandy colour of B-E Wheatear...

    Wheatear in Lesbos

About a decade ago, we found a pair of Wheatears seemingly breeding on the top of Mount Olympus in Lesbos. I thought I had settled the species but still have my doubts. A poor photo in poor light is attached. Your help is appreciated!

Basra, Iraq Bird ID help pls...Chiff Chaff?

I don't think Chiffy is off the cards, based on the head structure and blackish legs contrasting with pale feet

    Buzzard ID

Well, I wasn't convinced much on plumage but the wings seemed longer than Buzzard, bulging midway and tapering towards the hand. The head seemed to stick out a fair bit too. The dark tips to the primaries were reduced, compared to Buzzard. The yellow cere was also obvious in flight. However, I...
