    Young Birder

If anyone is interested, I got a reasonable video of the Penduline Tit at Clennon Valley, Devon, on Saturday. It can be viewed here.

You don't have to have an adapter for digiscoping. I digiscoped this Dunnock handheld last year. I got lucky and it was published in Birdwatching magazine. You don't have to splash out on any complex setup, just hold the camera in place, and with practise you'll get good images.

    Devon Birding

The Penduline Tit was again showing well at Clennon Valley this morning. I've put up a short video of the bird here. Broadsands with Josh M afterwards in good conditions produced single Red-necked and Black-necked Grebes, 23 Great Crested Grebes, 6 Eider, 16 Common Scoter, a Velvet Scoter and a...

660 were recorded on the Exe Estuary in 2001. 400+ is a normal count however. As Josh says, they're annual winter visitors in good numbers at several localities on the south coast.

6 were seen in Ide, just south west of Exeter on 3rd January, but there have been no reports since then in south Devon. Small numbers have been seen in Hants and Dorset too in the last few days, and singles were reported in Cornwall on 6th and 7th, so evidently birds are still moving west.

    Devon Birding

After getting back from yesterday's Glaucous-winged Gull twitch (thanks Mark), I was waiting to be picked up in Sainsbury's car park, Newton Abbot, when I stumbled accross a Pied Wagtail roost. 20-25 birds roosting in a large buddleia bush, right next to the McDonalds drive-thru. There was a lot...

Penduline Tit at Slapton Ley 11.30am in the south west corner according to RBA. Interestingly, the corresponding Birdguides report says North Ley. Anybody know if this is in reference to the Higher Ley, viewable from the bridge by the ringing hut? Fingers crossed the bird will stick around with...

18 Teal on the Dart at Totnes, just upriver from Brutus Bridge this afternoon. Also 2 Little Grebe, Little Egret and Grey Wagtail. 23 Lapwings in a field just off the A381 near the Pig and Whistle Inn at 15.00 - this is on the edge of my patch, and my first personal record for this area. At...

Slapton this morning. 2 Water Rail, 2 Ruddy Duck, 3 Goldeneye etc on the ley. Red-throated Diver and an oiled Guillemot offshore. Perry, have the Cattle Egrets been giving good views? Very poor light today so decided to postpone a trip to Kingsbridge, but if they've been showing well then it...

It's a domestic duck, with Mallard in its ancestry. 'Yuck ducks', as they're known.

    Devon Birding

Broadsands with Josh this morning, brisk (and very cold!) easterly wind stirring up the surface didn't help. c15 Common Scoters, Red-throated Diver, Red-breasted Merganser and several Great Crested Grebes were all out there, no doubt there was more, but viewing conditions were a nightmare.
