Scarlet Tanager winter male? - Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island, Florida; 10/10/22

I've had my Peterson guide for a while I guess (copyright 2002), but I must have gotten it to supplement my Audubon Society field guide published in 1987! The Peterson was much easier to use for a quick look-up. I guess it's time to refresh my library. :)

Scarlet Tanager winter male? - Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island, Florida; 10/10/22

Thanks! I had better success with identification using my Peterson field guide than I did searching online. :-)

Scarlet Tanager winter male? - Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island, Florida; 10/10/22

I saw this bird in our fountain this afternoon. This time of year I have my painted buntings; the females and immature males are green, while the males have a bright red chest. For a moment I thought I had a molting male. But then I realized this wasn't a bunting at all, as their wings aren't...

Unusually blue "greenie" painted bunting - Amelia Island, Florida

I suppose. For some reason its coloring stood out to me, as I see these all day long. Just a bit darker than usual with a tinge of blue. Most descriptions say they're bright yellow-green, which this is not (to my eyes). ;-)

Unusually blue "greenie" painted bunting - Amelia Island, Florida

I've been hosting painted buntings in my yard for more than 12 years now, and have a devoted group of at least a dozen who show up every season. (My husband jokingly refers to them as pests.) Occasionally we have an indigo bunting or two come through for a few days, usually February or March. A...

    Cape May Warbler? N. Florida

Thanks for the confirmation. The Merlin bird app makes me feel like an expert. It's always nice to get a live person to agree. :-) Kathy

    Cape May Warbler? N. Florida

Aw, Stu, I'll try! Shall I send it along with hurricane Lorenzo? Here's another new visitor for the season. Painted buntings stay in our yard from now until mid-April. This is the harbinger of the rest to come in the next few months. https://photos.app.goo.gl/PqT4p1sJGx7vxcGZ8

    Cape May Warbler? N. Florida

I'm seeing some migratory birds hit my back yard this past week or so. I'm on Amelia Island, just off the NE coast of Florida. I don't know if I've ever seen this one, but I think it might be a female Cape May warbler, seen Sept. 29. What say you? Thanks...

Help in identifying bird song - Amelia Island, FL

Well, then I believe both of you re: the gnatcatcher. Just as there is a certain cell phone tone that teenagers can hear, but older people cannot, I must be experiencing the same issue. My 65-year-old hearing absolutely does not detect the gnatcatcher. My son, who's 30, can hear it in the...

Help in identifying bird song - Amelia Island, FL

Randy - the White-eyed Vireo does sound very close; as you say, a variation of the standard song. Not too sure about the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. To my ears, I hear no other birds! I edited my post to advise that the other sound you may hear is the water fountain burbling. Thanks!

Help in identifying bird song - Amelia Island, FL

I have heard this bird in my heavily-wooded back yard only over the last month or so (April/May). Not daily, but occasionally. I can't see it so I have no idea what it looks like. I live on Amelia Island, off the northern Atlantic coast of Florida, just below the Georgia state line. Can anyone...

Birdsong ID - Amelia Island, Florida

Fascinating! I never knew that. I am always interested in word origins. I wish I owned a copy of the OED.

Birdsong ID - Amelia Island, Florida

Thank you! At last we know. We have tufted titmice (mouses?) visiting our feeders daily.

Birdsong ID - Amelia Island, Florida

We have been stumped by the sound of a bird heard just after sunrise; we don't hear it any other times of the day. I live on a barrier island off the NE coast of Florida, just below the state of Georgia. I heard it this morning, and the fastest thing I could think to do was to grab my cell...

Pls help identify yellow bird - N. FL

By gosh, I believe you're right. Funny... I grew up in the Washington DC area. I thought I knew what an oriole looked like and never gave it a second thought for this bird. Clearly this is a female? Feeling sheepish!
