    Canon 300mm II & Sigma 120-300mm OS

Me too, Tony - I'll try and get out tomorrow.

    Canon 300mm II & Sigma 120-300mm OS

MPB Photographic have done right with me on this: I sent it back, and on the day they received it, MPB emailed me to say they accepted that it was fritzed and that they'd send a replacement - they'd promised to put aside the other used one they had in stock as soon as I let them know about the...

Gloves / mitts for real cold!

David, in those temperatures I would honestly suggest that you'd be better using normal gloves and having one of these (or something like it) in your hands. It'll safely slip into a pocket or to the ground in an instant, so it won't slow you down at all, and will keep your hands warmer and...

    Siggy 120-300mm f/2.8 OS...

Well I was hoping to get out this weekend and really shake the lens down in good conditions, but that's not going to happen now (frustratingly, the weekend's forecast up here is scabby) but as soon as I have the opportunity I'll post some more samples up.

    Siggy 120-300mm f/2.8 OS...

The stabilisation is fantastic on the OS version - I reckon that it's worth the price of entry in itself: and speaking for my 120-300mm OS (and his too, it seems) the wide-open sharpness is excellent.

    Monitor calibration - CS 4

On my calibrated monitor the second image looks a lot more "true to life". That in itself is a good reason to calibrate a monitor, because I see lots of images that are horrendously over contrasty/saturated/bright, and even if you're only posting images online, it's good to know that what...

    Photographing Black and White Birds...

    Strange - I get this.

Would it make sense to buy a flash?

Yep. I'm very serious (amateur or not) about light and composition - and catchlights - and I've still never felt the need to make flash part of my armoury: and yet, I do just fine. But I work very hard to be aware of, and in the right position for, the available light, and will move and move...

Actually, "evident" 7D noise can be reduced simply by not pixel peeping in the first place.

    Photographing Black and White Birds...

Actually, depending on the overall scene and the metering mode in use, underexposing can be the worst thing to do to protect highlights (which I presume is Dimitris' problem) - Google "add light to white". It's also worth being selective about choice of converter - some are much, much better...

Would it make sense to buy a flash?

Hmmm... That's a good point, actually: I've realise that many of the pictures I'm bringing to mind of photographers with all the flash paraphernalia attached are in places like Florida. Mind you, I've had UK Turnstones, Sanderling, Purple sandpipers and Knot come too close to focus on with...

Would it make sense to buy a flash?

Oh I don't know - there are cases where flash has real value, and personally the extra weight wouldn't worry me too much, but I can't make the case for habitually sticking a flash and BB on the camera the way that some US photographers seem to do.

Would it make sense to buy a flash?

You'll occasionally see them in "black holes", but it's not a routine thing over here.

Would it make sense to buy a flash?

US photographers seem to be very keen on the use of flash, but it's something you very rarely see on this side of the Atlantic - I don't think I've ever seen a photographer in the field in the UK running a flash/Better Beamer set-up.
