Any birding ideas for a science fair project theme?

My 6th grade son really wants to do something related to birding for the upcoming science fair. I would greatly appreciate any ideas...we live in Alabama, there is a wildlife refuge for ducks/waterfowl migrating and some eagles nests about 30 minutes away. We could do the old "which bird food...

    Albino Red-tailed hawk!

My mom and I were coming home and she pointed out a white bird sitting on the telephone wires. As we passed, I realized it was an albino red-tailed hawk. My mom turned around so we could see it better and we got to see it fly off from the wire. We are going to try and return to the spot to...

Traveling to England...any bird lists for us?

I'm so excited to go now!!! I have to admit I had trepidation with all the travel warnings...but now to have all these cool sites for our family is great! I tried to get the Collins guide but they're sold out for 2-5 more weeks...I ordered two other guides..one being "Birds of Britain" or...

Traveling to England...any bird lists for us?

Thank you all!! I've got some homework for my son to do! :) That's the first thing he mentioned is that he really needs a field guide for England...quite literally we have over 15 field guides he has memorized, but alas, none for England so I'm going to hit Amazon.com or buy.com to find some...

    Do Hummingbirds Pant?

This is exactly what a hummingbird did for me 3 weeks ago..it was stuck in my garage and it took me 30 minutes to coax it down...I don't know how long it had been there but it finally latched on to the end of my tennis racket..I climbed down the ladder gently and it was panting and mouth was...

    Rarest bird you've found yourself

Fun! Painted bunting...queerest thing, I figured it was an exotic bird that had escaped someone's home...then realized what I'd seen once my son started his love for birding...I've tried to go back to the same site 3x and never have seen it again... Bald Eagle..not really rare sighting for our...

Traveling to England...any bird lists for us?

Hi all! I have an 11 year old that is fascinated/obsessed with birding. His face just lights up when he talks about them! We've pretty much found most the birds in our area over the past year...but at the local wildlife refuge there are species that just wander through every now and then and...

    Hummingbird licked my finger!!!!

I thought I had a great encounter with a hummingbird last year....one was caught in our garage hitting against the ceiling and exhausted, when I went to help it....it latched to the front of my shirt and I could feel the heartbeat against mine...it allowed me to walk it out of the garage and...

Traveling to London/Oxfordshire in September, any recommended birding sites?

Hi all! I have an 11 year old son that has a fascination (great) with birds. He can identify almost all the birds in the US guides and even knows most the English birds...he has probably invested over 300 hours just studying each guide he can get his hands on...so I really wanted to make some...

    Today at the feeder

An eventful Friday... It has been a year since my 10 year old son brought the love for birding into our house...the feeders I received for mother's day last year really started a love for birding in him. Well, we were blessed on Friday with a unique showing by two of his favorite birds...I...

    Red-tailed hawk

This fella perched on a brick column about 20 feet from our back porch. Seeking bunnies eating my annuals, perhaps?

No picture, but the best description I can make..

I wish it were as beautiful as the Cedar Waxwing...I think that is such a beautiful bird! I definitely ruled out the Mockingbird...those are very common and having been attacked by several I am quite intimate with their whirly ways...the white banding is not a stripe along the side of the tail...
