Comment by 'mkdon' in media 'wren feeding young'

Yes. The male makes nests in various places (all in boxes or some sort of structure. Then the female comes and chooses one, tears the nest apart and remakes it to her liking. Wrens sometimes drive bluebirds out of nest boxes.

    Bugs and Nuts

Has anyone out there tried the new birdfood from Wild Bird Marketplace (I think) called Bugs and Nuts? It is hugely expensive ($36.00 for 5 pounds) and I was wondering if anyone has tried it and did you have success with it? It has pecans in it and 1,000 dried flies per pound. Unlike some...

    What to do with peanuts?

You had asked about storage for the peanuts. I keep shelled peanuts halves in a trash can under my carport. I had to put a rock on top of it as the squirrels figured out how to get the lid lifted up. I have had them in there for a few months.

    difference niger seed quality??

Hello, I have noticed that if the seed is the least bit spoiled, the goldfinches will ignore it until fresh seed is put in the feeder. You may have gotten a bad batch. When I don't see any goldfinches for a while, I change the seed. Good Luck.

    Niger Feeder

Have you seen the upside down feeders? The holes for the nyjer seed are below the perches. The goldfinches have no problems using it, but the less agile birds are unable.

    Window Feeders

I am a teacher and I have a small feeder sticking on one of our classroom windows. Once they get used to it. they do use it. It has been up for two years and no birds have hit the window (at least while we were in the room). They will feed until a student gets too close, then they fly away...

    Least Liked Bird

House Sparrows, UGH. Their successful adaption to man has made them a danger to other cavity nesting species. Putting up a birdhouse in my yard is an invitation for the house sparrows to evict any species they so desire and move into any box I put up. We are allowed to kill them but I don't...

Whats in your garden right now?

In my garden, there is about 10 inches of snow. That really brings the avian visitors. Today was the northern cardinal, white throated sparrow, dark eyed junco, house sparrow, hairy woodpecker, tufted titmouse, black capped chickadee, and the carolina wren. I put a window feeder in the...

    Northern Mockingbird

You may want to feed fruit (the cranberries sound good to me, too) such as raisins or dried cranberries. You may also want to keep the fruit away from your main feeders as the mockingbirds are aggressive and may take over a feeder. Keep the fruit in a feeder of its own away from your other...

    Buzzed By A Hummingbird!

They truly are fearless. Imagine us attacking something of the size differential that the hummingbird faces when he (or she) bravely attacks us.

    5 summer birds

What are the 5 (or more) most prevalent summer birds in your area? I did a thread like this for the winter and spring and it was of great interest and value, as I don't know much about birds of the world. I live in south central Pennsylvania USA and the 5 summer birds that I see the most are...

Bird Guides do you or don't you

Hope I'm not too late to weigh in on this topic. When I drive, I keep the car manual in the glove box. When I play golf, I carry a rule book (and then ignore it). When I put a grill together, I use the instruction book. I don't give it a try to see how smart I am. I read the directions so...

    A tour of your garden

Part of my back yard was inspired by a book called The Sanctuary Garden by Christopher and Tricia McDowell (pub. Simon and Shuster). I have a half an acre and the back yard is bordered by forest at the rear. I have a deck on the back of the house and have followed the book in including water...
