    Finland birding - spotted redshank?

Will be visiting Finland in mid/late May (Helsinki), and have some time over a weekend. Of course 'birding' comes to mind, but I'd always fanced trying to see spotted redshank in breeding plumage. Of course we see them here on passage occasionally as individuals, but have always thought it would...

    Snow Buntings

I've had them up at the car park in mid-winter, but also on another trip where I'd climbed Carn Ban Mor for dotterel, and then later went up to Cairn Gorm, and we had ring ouzel, and with snow bunting flicking around the car park. That was in late May, and the winter trips have been Dec, Jan...

    Snow Buntings

Not sure about hanging around walkers, I've not seen then like that. But you can usually see them in the car park, to my memory most times I've been up there I've seen a flock around. On arriving at a summit I suppose it's common for walkers to eat, so perhaps they've learned to associate the...

    Holiday suggestions - UK migration?

Thanks very much. It's a good point - I very much doubt we will have see a second mortality spike, but there is a high chance the government will react to case numbers (as we're seeing around the country), and we get stuck somewhere! With flights no doubt even less pleasant than they were before...

    Holiday suggestions - UK migration?

Thanks to 'covid', my wife and I have many, many hours of holiday which we have to use, but are a bit restricted in when we can use. Only real time is in September, either 12th - 19th, or 19th - 26th (can go a little either side). Any suggestions on where would be good options to chill out...

    Autumnwatch 2019

I recall a panel debate with Dawkins, who was asked about evolution today. He opined that we appearded to be in a period of de-evolution at the moment. Perhaps he was right!

    Scotland advice

Hi, I second the recommendation of the book, and would also suggest the Heatherlea trip. I went on one of those trips a few years ago, and they were fantastic, really friendly and enjoyable trip, but going out of their way to give people a chance to see the main things they wanted. I think you...

Winter trip - Cirl bunting, Bewick swan, firecrest?

Just wanted to update the thread, as we're back yesterday. Had a fantastic trip thanks to all the wonderful advice on the thread. Friday: No cirl bunting at Broadsands, but drove up to Labrador Bay, and after braving a few squalls finally managed to identify that the flocking birds were indeed...

    Tayforth Birding

As people wash their cars, they'll have easy access to plenty of wax? :-)

Winter trip - Cirl bunting, Bewick swan, firecrest?

Many thanks again - sounds like a lot to enjoy. I might have to think about staying a bit longer. Are there any places recommended for wintering bittern? This may be a loaded question, as it's No.1 bogey bird for my wife - wherever she goes it's almost guaranteed no bittern will be seen! Tried...

Winter trip - Cirl bunting, Bewick swan, firecrest?

HUGE thanks to everyone, that's incredibly helpful. Firecrest seems to be like that everywhere! We had one in Glasgow last winter, but was incredibly difficult to see (not to mention walking around the centre of Glasgow pointing binoculars at apartment buildings....). Are there any areas...

Winter trip - Cirl bunting, Bewick swan, firecrest?

Hello, hoping for some advice from birders in the south-west. My wife and I were planning a weekend trip during winter (a Friday through Monday trip?), with the plan to see cirl bunting, a bird neither of us have seen, but also to enjoy some species we don't get or rarely get in Scotland...

    Lothian Birding

This really made me smile! I remember feeling exactly the same way, and it's really great. What I didn't expect is that many years later I STILL feel like a beginner, but also enjoy still just as much to see and identify any new birds or even new experiences! Wonderful hobby to have.

Help tackling some birds on the UK list

Wow, thanks, Northumberland sounds really great, within a reasonable drive from me. Do you know whether it's a wide area, and if so whether there are best trails to follow? We tried Raiders Road down south from us in Dumfries, and it's HUGE. You really need to have an idea where you're headed...

Help tackling some birds on the UK list

Thanks, that would be very interesting. We're still hoping to make a trip down at end of May, so planning where best to go. June would be better, but June weekends are looking very busy unfortunately :-(
