    Goshawk/Sparrowhawk UK

Food for Thought Thanks for the input folks, a bit of food for thought there with the tail-less sparrowhawk theory, which could also explain the strange look to the tail on a couple of images. Enough doubt there to put it in the inconclusive file anyway, hopefully I can get another (and closer)...

    Goshawk/Sparrowhawk UK

I spotted this distant accipiter giving a brief display this morning and was convinced it was a Goshawk while watching it but am no expert and have been fooled on many occasions in the past by displaying sparrowhawks at this time of year. Can anyone offer a positive ID from the attached...

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2014

Anyone out there know of reliable sites in the Windermere area of the Lake District for Beautiful Demoiselle and/or Keeled Skimmer? Preferably with reasonably easy access as I'll have the family in tow. Thanks Alan M

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2014

Last year (July 7th to be precise) I got Northern Emerald at Uath Lochans. As we got lost on the way (my rubbish navigational skills) we only had a short time there but enough to bag a foraging male and a perched up female not far from the car park, so might be worth a look there. Good luck anyway.

Friends of Red Kites - in the North East of England

Kites on Display Anyone going in to Newcastle in the next few days might be interested in seeing my exhibition : Red Kite Retrospective (and a bit more besides) at Newcastle City Library until Wednesday evening. It's a selection (but by no means all) of the originals and prints I've made since...

Friends of Red Kites - in the North East of England

That's the amazing thing June, I take photos of birds in the garden from the kitchen window and the quality (from no more than 12-15 feet) is terrible. I've taken photos before of Flame in those conifers from outdoors and they've been rubbish. The light from the low early morning sun on Tuesday...

Friends of Red Kites - in the North East of England

Interesting Mick, I was just assuming he was one of the pair that nested on the farm as he's always hereabouts, but I maybe have that wrong. I've passed on more detailed info to Ken anyway and will keep an eye out for any more activity. Cheers Alan M

Come in Number 6 . . . . Took these photos of Flame on Tuesday morning, the amazing thing about them is that are taken from the bairn's bedroom window, and haven't turned out bad seeing as they're at 18x zoom through double-glazing with a point and press camera. Just shows what a glorious...

    Dragonfly, Acadia NP, Maine

Looks good for female Calico Pennant to me ? But not being familiar with too many US species am not sure if there are any similar for confusion. Cheers.

    Hairy query ?

Has anyone ever noted Brachytron pratense hawking in woodland? Reason I ask is I have an unsolved mystery from back on June 30th when I saw my first hawker of the year in a small woodland clearing (and not close to any ponds though there is one in the wood with broad-bodied chasers). It was...

    caterpillar ID and advice request

Cheers Martin, that's exactly what I've done, I didn't think it right to keep it shut up in a box for too long only to die without using its wings for the purpose they were intended, so tonight it was released into the great outdoors. I suppose most folk would have just washed it down the...

A Shady Character The final part of the saga occured today as this feller was found in the customised home I'd made for Henry the caterpillar. I don't know an awful lot about moths but I recognised this one as an Angle Shades (as suggested by Jono) without looking it up, meaning it's as common...

    caterpillar ID and advice request

Thanks Jono, have looked at hundreds of caterpillar photos but haven't found an exact match, dorsal view shows just the same colouring as what you see in the pic., just the pale lines along the flanks differ from the rest of the body. The colouring of the caterpillar faded in the days prior to...

    caterpillar ID and advice request

Thanks for the info and advice, my main concern was if it were to emerge while still in the grip of winter, but hopefully we may be well on the way to spring if not beyond by the time anything happens. I'll be checking on it every morning and will give it a fine mist spray of water every few...

    caterpillar ID and advice request

Took it's time but late last week our caterpillar transformed into a shiny chestnut-coloured chrysalis. Pardon my ignorance and as we don't know the species this might be a daft question but how long will it likely be before it emerges? Paul kindly offered the info it could be a noctuid so...
