Birding tours in Hawaii in June?

You probably are not going to find any regularly organized tours in summer, except maybe more informal ones led by a local birding club/Audubon chapter. Peak birding season is generally winter and early spring, although most everything other than Bristle-thighed Curlew should be around for your...

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

Indeed. Hell, apparently AOS has already voted on the third set of proposals this year for the annual update, and we haven't even gotten a look at what those proposals are.

The ebird update - How do you like it?..

I like the new look...it will take a bit to get adjusted to the new placement of things, but don't see the doom and gloom people are preaching about the update.

    Aegithalidae

I wouldn't expect movement on this without nuclear DNA and a examination of the hybrid zones, at minimal.of the World suggests the two populations come into contact, or at least get close to one another.

    Gentrification attracts wildlife

I think a bigger problem (speaking of only the states...I won't comment on other countries) is that economic conditions make it difficult to get that spark of interest to begin with. When parents are working multiple jobs (or there is just a single parent) just to make ends meet, they simply...

    Gentrification attracts wildlife

I'm suspicious the "kids recognize more pokemon than animals" is actually a new phenomena. I'd bet if you looked at any decade, most kids would probably be more able to recognize cartoon characters, toy characters, film and TV characters, or professional athletes than wildlife (I have trouble...

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Am I mistaken, or is this from a batch of proposals that isn't even released yet to the general public?

    Subspecies groups and future splits

When there is an existing name in use (even if the name kind of sucks?) I generally go with that name. I'm trying not to reinvent the wheel since too many "novel" decisions makes the list less useful for other folks. That said, I would give fairly low probability to Volcano Hummingbird being...

    Turdidae

IIRC, there was a failed proposal to split Swainson's Thrush a few years ago that the AOS voted on. I wonder if this paper would change there minds, or if selection against hybrids due to migration patterns mismatch is not considered a "valid mechanism" to enforce speciation.

Peninsular Malaysia...feels a bit more affordable and a better introduction, and I don't have the finances to do Borneo on the same trip.

    The 10% Club - Milestones

Near-term goals: First, I would like to hit 2000 species before my 46th birthday, which is basically less than 2 years from now. I am hoping I can maybe pull off a short Belize trip this summer (40-60 potential lifers), and a trip to Malaysia next year (200+ lifers), so I think this is doable...
