    Today at the feeder

As a curious but not very well informed Australian, I'd like to ask if those turkeys are the original native turkey or have they become crossbred with the domesticated 'table' turkey. And ----Dare I ask------Is one allowed to shoot one for the Thanksgiving dinner table? I hope I don't cause an...

    Birding areas around Perth

Thanks for that posting Gemfyre. I'll be going to Perth for a week or so soon so will take a copy of your post with me. I will be restricted in time but should have a chance of a couple of hours here and there. I've spent a few weeks birding in WA many years ago but will be happy to refresh my...

    Today at the feeder

Hello Everybody, I've been out of touch with BirdForum for a couple of years and have just opened it up again. It's great to see all the same old names contributing. I don't have a bird table as such, just put out a bit of seed for the parrots once a week, but so far this morning I've seen a...

How would you rate yourself as a birder?

Used to be crash hot but now just a 'has been'. :-(

Give 5 examples of birding gone bad.

    1) Nearly drowned whilst doing a survey on a small island. The hired boat didn't have a bung in the bunghole and didn't have a 'bailer' on board so I took off my Wellington Boot and used that as a bailer. (Got a pic to prove it too). 2)Yes, on another occasion doing the same survey on a...

Birding: Socially Acceptable in your country?

A good summary, Pete. You are quite right about city people in Australia not knowing anything about birds, but as in S Africa, you find that the 'county' people are much more informed. Unfortunately they tend to use out of date names for the birds so it is sometimes hard to know exactly which...

    Aussie Local patch

My local patch is beginning to get very cold and winterish now. The Lyrebirds are more active and are ripping the garden up searching for worms and grubs, if only I could train them to dig up weeds instead of my most precious small shrubs! But I really can't complain because I chose to live here...

    Hi from Alaska

Hello Pam, Welcome from the opposite side of the globe. You will probably be looking at some of the migrant shore birds that left here a few weeks ago. Say G'day to them for me. I miss them when they leave.

    Hello from Oz

Hi Bird Faery, I'm also in Victoria and your list is not all that different to mine. I don't have the Brown Treecreeper, Pallid Cuckoo, Diamond Firetail etc so I guess you are in a slightly drier area. I'm in Gembrook in the Dandenongs. Your cottage sounds wonderful. Nancy

    Hello from Australia

Hello All, I was a member of this Forum some years ago but have not posted for a few years. I may well be doubling up on membership because I never 'unsubscribed' . Have forgotten my password and all that, but at that time I was 'Nancy' without the 06. Anyway it's nice to be back and I look...
